If you like to reboot constantly then this is the NAS for you!
28 August 2014
Summary: I bought the KD20 orignally about a year ago because all I wanted was a basic NAS to do some backups and provide a centralized media server. Well, as others have mentioned numerous times, while it performs these functions fine when it's "up", the problem is it's a Houdini...now you see it, now you don't. It likes to disappear from the network and requires a hard reset to get access again.
Summary: Don't waste your money! If you want a RAID NAS go buy a Syncology. The Shuttle KD20 works great when it works. But I have to give this a 1 star since I have to hard boot it once a week. The interface is VERY simple and easy to use. Some times it's TOO simple and there is no onscreen help function for the each command or page like MOST hardware/software solutions. The online support is pretty bad also. I've had the same haning issue every week I've had this.
Summary: I have had a Netgear Stora for years. I never had any trouble with it until the network card part of it died. I thought i would update with this Network Attached Storage. I did read the reviews and thought maybe they just had a bad device. I had no trouble installing the two 1 TB drives I had. I was able to easily perform the "setup" of the device. The next morning i tried to access the drive and it wasn't on the network.
Summary: The disk seems to be good for it price: well built, plenly of functions, mobile client... all is great except one detail: sometimes, disk gets "asleep" and it is necessary to restart it in order to access... This is really annoying, in the best case and completely unacceptable, if you need a reliable NAS. The manufacturer has issued a lot of firmware upates, and I even contacted them once, regarding this issue. The suggested nothing and the problem persists...
You'd be better off using at least a ZyXel or pay for Synology

Summary: So I had a ZyXel and this Shuttle KD20 and I have them running side by side. Software wise, when comparing it to the ZyXel, you will really begin to understand how underperforming the software is. The software lacks FTP ability, lacks the ability to specifically identify key folders that you want to backup to an external hard drive (meaning you have to back up the WHOLE NAS, vs just one folder).
Summary: Fan quit working in less than 24 hrs. In the short time it worked, it worked very well. Shuttle needs to fix the fan or else pull this product off the market. No more Shuttle products for me. Thanks Amazon for hassle free return procedure.
