Summary: Fairly easy set up if you use the wizard they provide which sets up a RAID 6 array. Transfers on my network have been nice and speedy 60 to 90 MBs. Most important you can if required power down the unit and restart it with confidence that it will power up and work the same cannot be said of the 8 bay Synology (visit their support forums-do not take my word for it) and Synology support is unwilling or unable to make good on the failed boards.
Summary: We own three Qnap servers, and as now they have worked very well. We use them as a centralized storage for video production. They notify you when a disk has a problem, and migrate the information to the others until you can change it. For the price is the best choice.
Summary: I dont write a lot of reviews but we have had this now for over one year at our company and it's wonderful! Run a Film/TV production company and this has worked great so far keeping all of our files safe and has create da great workflow for the office - one central location for all files. Was fairly easy to setup for such a complex device. You are able to log in online and see you files from anywhere and it has a user-friendly interface.
Excerpt: This product was purchased to replace an antiquated in house server at the small business that I work for. Setup was very easy; anyone with a basic knowledge of computers & networks shouldn't have an issue setting this up. The only issue that I have had with this unit is booting up while it has backup drives attached. If you attempt to turn this unit on while there are external (USB) hard drives connected expect it to take a VERY long time to boot.
Pros: Easy To Manage, Easy To Set Up, Fast, Highly Compatible
Summary: This is my first NAS. Construction seems solid and hardware setup/drive installation was easy. The feature set with this product is very strong. Multiple protocols and connection schemes are supported. My only complaint is that I wish there was a wizard for an "easy" setup in a SoHo environment. Maybe this is an unfair or unrealistic expectation as this product is designed to be able to support dozens of connected users at a time.
Summary: It works well, however for real time transcoding of video, it's possible but lacks the horsepower for some tasks. Works great for storage, though ACL rights are a bit cumbersome to figure out.
Summary: [Important Update: I still think the NAS is a great product but Aperture has crashed multiple times and required numerous time-consuming library rebuilds. Further research shows that Aperture should not be used with this type of system at all :(. A great pity since it was working so well before it started to fail. I don't think this problem is inherently any producer's fault - I should have discovered that Aperture is not meant for use with this type of device.
Excerpt: Using it as NAS for media and computer backup, streaming to PS3, Popcorn hour, LDAP and FTP. Works flawlessly and fast. Some applications with it, most of them I don't really see a point in using (photo, music etc station), but they might find be of importance to someone. Memory can be added, but even with current use the 1GB provided seems to be more than enough. Happy with the purchase.
