TS-809U-RP

Michael P., Newegg
20 January 2011
  • Summary: Running 8, 2TB Western hard drives in Raid 6 configuration. Really impressed with the speed of transfer too, I was able to transfer 4 TB of data in less than a day from previous server.
  • Pros: Unit worked out of the box with no problems. Easy to upgrade firmware and very intuitive software.
  • Cons: Nothing major so far. Fans are a little loud and it takes a few minutes longer than i thought to boot up, but no performance issues what so ever.

Not so good..

Lance L., Newegg

  • Pros: None- after 3 days still cannot get unit to work.
  • Cons: Had unit less than a day and Drive 3 slot failed. Tried reseating the connectors, downgrading firmware, nothing helped. After looking around on net, discovered this is a known problem with these units.. I would not recommend this product, it is not enterprise class regardless of their claims.

  • Summary: Comments about QNAP Systems Turbo NAS TS-809 Pro Network Storage Server: This NAS is great. I use it for my 16 cctv cameras at my business. I bought 8(additional $$)hard drives WD 1500 Green HD for my system. I use raid 5.
  • Pros: Durable, Fast Connectivity, Quiet, Reliable, Versatile
  • Cons: Expensive, No Hardrives

Super Fast

Riverbend R., Newegg

  • Summary: I wanted to test the ISCSI feature (which I have absolutely no experience with) and I was able to carve out a 700GB drive over my network and connect within just a few minutes. I was very pleased. Even over my 100Mbps network the ISCSI transfers files very quickly.
  • Pros: I Bought this TS-809U-RP about 7 months ago and loaded it with eight 1TB WD1002FBYS drives in RAID 6. It Has 2 Gbps Ethernet adapters but even on my 100Mbps network it screams compared to my other Win based NAS. It was very easy to setup and use, it's loaded with all sorts of cool features and ha...
  • Cons: The one thing that REALLY bites about this unit is that folder permissions can only be set at the root level of the share. Maybe it's a limitation of the Linux OS, i dunno. I wanted to create a single shared folder named users then create a sub folder under that for each user and give a unique us...

Overall pretty impressed

Andrew P., Newegg

  • Summary: I know I haven't owned this unit long - but having owned another "Pro" Qnap turbo NAS I feel quite confident this unit will perform as well or better than my personal unit. So If you need up to 14 TB (7 drives x 2 tb each) online in a Raid-5 array (or Raid 6, JBOD or what have you) that you can...
  • Pros: I have been an IT Manager for the past 12 years. I purchased the Qnap TS-439 Pro for personal use about a year ago and have been extremely pleased with all the features, reliability, integration with active directory, etc. Since I had such a great experience with mine we decided to order this 8 d...
  • Cons: None really. Qnap makes some very nice hardware and the latest firmware makes setup and management quite simple. I guess this isn't the most inexpensive option but it is a good one in my opinion. You do get what you pay for and this is no exception.

So far, so good

Anonymous, Newegg

  • Summary: Bought primarily as a storage space for images of servers, I've been impressed that with ports aggregated on the QNAP unit, the target server, and the connecting switch, my backup software creates images of ~8-9GB servers in less than 10 minutes.
  • Pros: Throughput. NIC port aggregation is nice. Many RAID options. Management interface is visually nice, but see below.
  • Cons: Certain features, such as AD integration seem quirky. The instructions on what information to enter in which field are vague, which made the domain joining process a hit-or-miss one. Once it joined the domain, however, access and permissions to shares and resources seemed a bit buggy, as accounts...

Good for backups

Roger E., Newegg
3 November 2009
  • Summary: For the money this is a great solution.
  • Pros: I needed a hi-capacity device for backing up SAN. With no production LUN's we didn't want to go over kill with expensive solutions. In comes QNAP with this rack mount edition. Rails installed effortlessly in our rack and it came with the latest firmware. This unit has the intel core 2 duo 2.8g pr...
  • Cons: This isn't my first QNAP and with any QNAP be sure to upgrade your firmware first if needed, then create your volume as major firmware upgrades don't support backward compatibility with previously built volumes; Bizarre, and they won't tell you either. The backup software is worthless, but you'd ...

  • Summary: I ordered two of these with the intent of using one as a primary and the second as a backup. I also ordered 16 Hitachi 2TB HD's from another vendor. Both units presented with hardware issues.

Bought new and was sent a refurb...

Jeffrey C., Newegg
30 July 2009
  • Summary: I've never had an issue with Newegg customer service but this was one of the worst handled returns I've ever had to deal with. I am VERY disappointed that all this has happened and am honestly shocked since their service has always been so good.
  • Pros: Lots of storage and lots of options including ISCSI, which is why I purchased it. Great device for filestorage and VM snapshots! I also love the fact it integrated with my APC UPS and can be shutdown in the event of a power failure.
  • Cons: Two things I was VERY upset about. 1. When the device was shipped to me it was a refurbished/repaired unit. The front panel LCD was damaged and the warranty sticker was broken indicating someone had opened the case even though the unit came in a box with the sealed manufacturer tape still intact....
