User Review

Jeremy B., Newegg
24 March 2012
  • Summary: This unit can do way more then I will ever use it for. I went for a 6 bay for actual storage capacity. My primary use for this NAS will be for Media storage. Setup is fairly easy and depending on the number and size of your drives will take awhile. I used four 3 TB drives used a Raid 5 setup.
  • Pros: Price for number of bays Low Power consumption at idle and full load. Features
  • Cons: I wish the boot up time after a "wake on lan" command was faster. I can not compare this to anything, this was my first NAS. Takes about 1-1.5 minutes from sending the WOL command to allow access to the storage.

Great value, Feature Rich

Anthony P., Newegg

  • Summary: To realize the true performance, you need a switch that supports 802.3ad, newegg sells a few...otherwise, you'll only benefit from failover, which still isn't bad.
  • Pros: Very decent performance, excellent price point and value to house 6 drives. Quiet. Surprisingly a lot of features beyond a simple storage device, you can run web apps and even a RADIUS server....links to AD is nice, but haven't tried it - an earlier review makes me nervous about hooking to AD.
  • Cons: I don't have much respect for the Atom processors...I wish it was a bona-fide Intel processor, it probably would be a bit faster, especially on RAID levels that need to calculate parity.

Best Office / Home Entertainment NAS

Brent H., Newegg
4 October 2011
  • Summary: Wish NewEgg would carry additional QNAP accessories such as power supplies and drive trays. I have both a 659 Pro+ and an older 639 and both are worth every penny. NewEgg shipping of these units has been an issue. The 639 I purchased over 2 years ago came in an unsealed QNAP box.
  • Pros: Great performance, reliable, expandable (QPKG), customizable, very user friendly, great user community, very good vendor support (continual firmware upgrades). The 659 with 7200 RPM drives pushes 90MB/s sequential writes when copping large files such as DVD backups. Read speeds approach 110MB/s. ...
  • Cons: I bought and Open Box unit to save some coin, it had only one flaw, a noisy power supply. I didn't want to void the warranty by opening the case to dampen the vibrating power supply, so I added a decorative CatGoyle which applied just enough pressure to the top of the case to stop the vibration a...

Excellent Piece Gear

Harold N., Newegg

  • Pros: I cant say enough about this unit. Extremely feature rich. I have configured it using iSCSI with my Backup Exec server for use as hard drive backup unit. It has 2 gig ethernet connections that can be bonded together for twice the throughput.
  • Cons: The unit arrived in an un-sealed original qnap container. I really think it should have been shipped inside another box. Fortunatley the original container had good foam packaging.

very nice

Marcus J., Newegg

  • Summary: I ordered the TS-659 Pro+ in Nov 2010 from newegg based on the review of a friend who did his own extended research. After it arrived I got serious about finding some drives for it. I ordered 7x 2TB drives for it directly from Japan for $97. Brand new Hitachi 0S02602.
  • Pros: Software feature set is remarkable. I'm blown away by the quality of the experience of the admin software you see when you navigate to the built in web server on the nas. It's like something Apple would do. Lots of colorful icons and smooth looks, and cover flow! Wow, that was unexpected. I've ba...
  • Cons: Not a lot of reviews here, so was nervous getting it. I'm surprised QNAP isn't on the dedicated NAS newegg page. The quality of the product vs the lack of customer mojo on newegg here is odd. This is my first review and why I've decided to write this.

Awesome Performance!

Thomas H., Newegg
26 November 2010
  • Summary: THis NAS is lightening fast on my 1Gbps network. I'm running an iMac (3.06 Intel Core 2 Duo w/4GB Ram, 1TB HDD, Leopard) and this thing is blazing fast on read's and writes using AFP. I'll hammer this thing with 6 consecutive writes and it will complete them all without a hitch.
  • Pros: Great performance! Get this NAS and you won't be disappointed!
  • Cons: Price, but you pay for what you get AND I should have gone with the TS-859 Pro+ with two additional drive bays and upgradable processor instead of the TS-659 Pro+. I was initially unsure but now I know it would have been a wise choice. The Ajax interface is really nice but you'll need to know wha...

QNAP Nas

Anonymous, Newegg
6 November 2010
  • Summary: I've only owned the TS-659 about a month, but I've owned another QNAP nas for over a year before that hence the high ownership time. I debated on giving this NAS 4 stars, but I think considering the few obvious issues, it's a home run device.
  • Pros: Device is beautiful and reliable. Feature set is out of this world. Top of the like hardware and software. The company doesn't seem to be the type to say "gotcha" when you require support or warranty service. The device is easier to configure than a ReadyNAS I previously had (but that was before ...
  • Cons: Raid migration and expansion is not very reliable. I've had expansions fail on me about a handful of times (and succeed even less, so it's not a large sample size). The feature is advertised as dummy proof, but it's really not. It will most likely fail and you'll need to poke around via ssh to fi...

I'll bet it's a great device!

Bill M., Newegg
2 November 2010
  • Summary: The least NewEgg could do for an item in this price range is slap a piece of tape on the box... I have yet to unpack mine, but there is literally nothing stopping prying delivery employees or "other" from opening it before me...
  • Pros: Probably a great device! (Haven't opened it up yet).
  • Cons: As the other reader has noted, NewEgg sent this without any additional packaging; it wasn't even taped shut.

Good Item, Good Price, Poor Shipping

Larry S., Newegg
30 September 2010
  • Summary: QNAP also has an iphone/ipad app out there to give full access to their NASes. Can't wait to really put that to the test.
  • Pros: Good price on the NAS that just hit the market. A small CPU increase from the TS-659 PRO, but that should give a 5% thru put increase. Have a bunch of Seagate 2TB Constellation drives on order, will report more once everything is up and running for awhile.
  • Cons: Shipping was quick....but that's as far as I can go on this. The box was just the QNAP box with a shipping label stuck on it. NO ADDITIONAL PROTECTION. Plus, the box did not even have any kind of seal on it! You simply pull the two little cardboard slots and open it up. ANYONE ALONG THE WAY COULD...

Great Device

Anonymous, Newegg
24 September 2010
  • Summary: I tried a Drobo FS first due to the price difference, but you get what you pay for. the Drobo I got was unreliable and three times slower on data transfers. This device would be suitable for small businesses as well as the more advanced home user wanting to serve up a ton of media.
  • Pros: Easy web interface, simple to config. SUPER FAST, I get 95 Megabyte (yes Megabyte not megabit) per second write speeds, and 105 Megabyte per second read speeds. You can join to Active Directory for permissions, create ISCSI targets and more. I love the built in upnp media server, it works like a ...
