QNAP TS-421 & QTS 4.0

26 July 2013
  • Summary: The TS-421 is essentially an upgraded TS-419P II with more RAM, which is the main reason behind the minimal price difference. It may seem like a small difference, but I assure you that its increased amount of RAM plays a key role in many of its functions and the new windowed QTS 4.0 firmware runing smoothly. Speaking of the new QTS 4.0, I have only one thing to say: It is awesome!
  • Pros: New QTS 4.0 is awesome!, Performance with USB 3.0 external storage devices, Very low power consumption, Silent operation, Tons of features, Quality construction, Support for four hot-swap disks, Supports all popular RAID levels, Dual Gigabit ports (with LACP support), Two USB 3.0 ports, LCD display boosts usability, Lots of optional application packages, Interactivity with smartphones through several well-designed apps, myQNAPcloud service
  • Cons: Price is on the high side, Not so fast in RAID 6 and RAID 5, CPU struggles to cope with heavy data throughput from multiple clients, Long boot/shut-down time, The HDD trays are not numbered, Should have an option for automatic media scanning deactivation when CPU load is increased, Short warranty

The QNAP NAS Show 2013: From Small (TS-220) to Medium (TS-421) to Large (TS-870U-RP)

23 July 2013
  • Summary: This is the best unit to start your NAS journey with IF your storage needs are such that they can be handled with just two drives. And you have to remember that not the full capacity of these drives can be utilised if you also want some redundancy. Good performance, good features and just all-round good value for money. Check your online pricing but you should be able to find it tagged at around $260 here in Australia.

Qnap TS-421

17 May 2013
  • Conclusion: The TS-421 NAS has been given the task of introducing the world to Qnap's refreshed operating system, QTS 4.0. It's both a privilege and a burden, as though QTS 4.0 has plenty going for it, Qnap's rapid product launch cycle leaves the TS-421 sat in the midst of half-a-dozen similar alternatives.
