Summary: I already have a Drobo on firewire which I got for firewire speed. This time, I needed a NAS and traded off between QNAP and Synology. I settled on QNAP because of price, the OS/Software experience, and I wanted to give some of the apps a try (particularly Plex). Setup is *fairly* straightforward using QNAP's QTS operating system (that looks like some linux that's been customized).
Great product for the price, does everything and more that I need

Summary: I debated between this device and an equivalent Synology device. While both had great reviews, in the end QNAP had everything I needed at a lower price. At the price I paid I got more than what I would have from Synology of equal price. Any extras I would have gotten from Synology at a higher price I wouldn't need or used. My main purpose for buying this was to be a central file storage, process a backup to an external drive, and have access to data while away from home.
Summary: I use a pair of WD 3T Green drives - everything works at advertised. Throughput is acceptable across the wire - slower than my old G3 Compaq/HP server but MORE than adequate for home/SOHO use (about 1/2 a gig was my best case on large files with large frames). Hot swap is nice - the drive trays feel cheap/"plasticky", rest of the unit is fine.
Pros: Simple setup, quiet, lots of software included - more downloadable via the web
