Works great as an application server

Richard D., Newegg
25 January 2009
  • Summary: if you are looking for an inexpensive file server, and don't want the expense and hassle of buying/maintaining a dedicated Windows 200x server, this Qnap may be the answer.
  • Pros: Quick and easy setup. Just make sure you use drives that are supported by Qnap. Presales support was fantastic. Others have said the drive was noisy, I find this one to be whisper quiet. The user forums are civil, no screaming, almost downright pleasant. They are easy to navigate and members seem...
  • Cons: The documentation leaves a lot to be desired, but even I was able to figure it out. The MAJOR problem that exists is the incredibly slow transfer rates when moving files using Vista Windows Explorer. This is a known issue that has been around for a long time. I am surprised that Qnap has not addr...

Works as advertised

Vinh P., Newegg
24 November 2008
  • Summary: The non pro units are hardware identical to the pro units and can be flashed or hacked to get the same functionality as the Pro ie AD authentication, NFS. There is also a large community that has many software packages that can be installed via the qpk system.
  • Pros: The unit was easy to setup, and though the interface could look nicer it was fairly intuitive. My Popcorn Hour media server found the nfs/smb shares easily. I didn't do any tests but copying large iso movie files from my PC to the NAS was fairly quick. With 2 Samsung drives in mine, the unit was ...
  • Cons: It takes a bit long to reboot with no feedback other than 2 or 3 beeps to warn you the system is booting. No eSata for direct connection to a PC. No SNMP support

More then a NAS

Anonymous, Newegg
30 September 2008
  • Summary: This product is easily more of a server then it is a NAS. If you're a power user looking for a 2-bay solution, look no further: this was made for you.
  • Pros: I was hesitant at first choosing this NAS mainly because of the cost. Regardless, I got it anyway and only now I see why it's price tag is higher: the box is a beast! You really get what you pay for. * FAST. Transfer speeds are consistent. * Linux. QNAP even offer full ipkg support right from the...
  • Cons: The fan? It's not terrible, but they could have threw in a quieter model. If it really bothers you, newegg has plenty of other 70mm case fans that you can replace it with (3 pin).

Excellent NAS Device

Paul R., Newegg

  • Summary: Put a ZALMAN FAN MATE 2 Fan Controller inside to reduce fan speed and it's silent! You have to remove the four cover screws and ten internal screws to get to the fan connector; then the Fan Mate plugs right in.
  • Pros: Raid 1, super fast drive installation, easy management, excellent interface, great support, hot drive swap, solid performance!
  • Cons: None
