Fundamentally Flawed

Ian, Amazon
27 February 2015
  • Summary: First to say that I have run this NAS for a number of years, around 6 or 7, and it's given little trouble. It streams FLAC files to Sonos, Sd and HD video to networked media players, and stores my important files and all is fine.

Internet connection required

SynchMeister, Amazon
7 September 2011
  • Summary: In order to begin setup, you would need internet connection. Fair enough I do have internet connection, but not the one required to begin using this item. What it should say on the package is that you need 1) A wired broadband connection (such as a fibre optic or telephone wired connection) to set...

Not impressed with Netgear Stora Device

rayt, Amazon
27 September 2010
  • Summary: Purchased the Netgear Stora Device after seeing article in Stuff magazine and thought it sounded idea for my data backup and remote access issues. Whilst easily installed and all working, I have found it to be incredibly slow, drops out on large transfers and generally not worth having.

Very difficult to set up

Steve Martin, Amazon
5 September 2010
  • Summary: I am moderately able with home networks etc, and bought the netgear stora due to its supposed ease of use; however, have spent a full week trying to set this up (just want a central storage for music files which others on the network can play), but all I get is problem after problem.

Netgear Stora

Mr. R. F. Bennell "Grey Daemon", Amazon
13 July 2010
  • Summary: Can't really make much of a comment as have not been able to get the damn thing to work with Windows7 as yet, seem to be a software problem as is visible on the network & not blocked by the firewall, if I ever get it going I'll post an update,8( Also you do not need to purchase the SATA cable kit...

Plug and don't play - not all it should be!

Mr. Ben Hulme "Dogman73", Amazon
2 June 2010
  • Summary: Bought a 1TB stora a couple of weeks ago, with a second hard drive for RAID backup. To cut a long and boring story short, after two weeks of setting up, reinstalling, rebooting and reconfiguring, I've sent it back for a refund. When it works, it's brilliant.

Great potential, but security/privacy model flawed

C. D'ALBIS, Amazon
8 May 2010
  • Summary: Just got my Stora up and running, but will be returning it. The basic idea is great and the execution is decent, but the fact that NetGear forces you to store the username and password for a device in your home on a central server and forces you to maintain a connection to this central server is...

When novelty wears off - it really disappoints - mine finally broke with no repair.

Dirk, Amazon
21 April 2010
  • Summary: A brief review to warn you about the problems: - there is no direct backup to the device - it must happen through the network. - it 'occasionally' connects to other devices (PS3, etc) - it is so temperamental that I eventually gave up looking for it and if I needed a file I just copied it (w/ USB...

ONLY useful if you want to access it from the Internet

Andrew Thorne, Amazon
27 March 2010
  • Summary: This item is advertised as a Network Attached Storage device as well as a Server. - It is NO SUCH THING What Netgear don't advertise is that you ABSOLUTELY MUST connect to the Internet in order to run the setup, and use it in any meaningful way.
