This is ok if you like hacking, but not if you "just want something that works"

  • Summary: I've had this product for a couple months. In short, it is a pain to use, but it works if you're good at hacking on things. I had the disadvantage of using it with a 750G drive, which it's not supported for, but this wasn't advertised anywhere I saw!! Apparently Linksys support stops at 2 250G drives attached. Some things don't work for me, for example now I cannot format the disk through the web interface. Why would I need to do that? Because...

Performance is unreliable and inconsistent

  • Summary: I'm actually quite surprised that the NSLU2 device currently has an average of 3.5 stars. Unfortunately, for such a simple device, I have found it to be a dismal waste of my time. It has been unreliable and performance has been inconsistent. I bought this device to give to my sister, as a means of allowing her to store music and movie files on her network. She has very little technical understanding, so a device that is easy-to-setup and use is a requirement.

  • Excerpt: I have owned an NSLU2 Storage Unit for about 1 year now. I used it out of the box as standard for about 2 months before deciding to hack it. Mainly due to its instability. I then modified my unit to run at double speed and not only serve as a network storage device but also to run a simple web server and MP3 streaming server. NOTE: Hacking this device is not for the faint hearted! This kit runs Lynux and hacking it requires you to be confident working with Lynux.
  • Pros: Low cost, small size, low - power consumption .  Very hackable for those of you who like to get more out of your toys .
  • Cons: Cabling can become a bit of a rats nest .  Requires an external USB harddrive .
