It's okay...

Derek S., Newegg
23 April 2009
  • Summary: I really like the look of this thing (it matches my WRT150n router). Remember: This thing is not a file server. Do not expect it to be a file "server" because it's intended for secure data storage. It was also designed to use very little electricity (11-24watt NAS vs. 700watt file server).
  • Pros: Useful data storage. Looks good on the desk. 'Somewhat' easy to manage. I like that you have to have a user account to access ANYTHING. Low wattage (11-24ish watts). I also like that the 2 usb slots support thumb drives and external hard drives. And lastly the fan is quiet.
  • Cons: As stated in the other reviews this thing only transfers at about 3-4MB/sec. That's roughly about 30-40mbit/sec. However, that's half-duplex. If you are copying stuff from one drive to another the upload affects the download (half-duplex). I find the web manager quite cumbersome. The manager just...

Best Ever

PAUL F., Newegg
21 April 2009
  • Summary: I like the first one so much I bought another and now I have 4 SATA 's @ 4T of storage for my on call movies
  • Pros: The prefect network storage. It only takes about 2 min to go on line after turning them on at a 8 input network hub (has a booting system) I set it to have a static IP and it has never let me down. I can depend on it for all my storage/file access!
  • Cons: I would like it to be faster like it was in a computer but networking is just not there yet...... I can live with it.

Very Satisfied With This Product

Mr. H., Newegg
18 March 2009
  • Summary: I would not hesitate to buy another one and put it on my Network!
  • Pros: Since I installed and powered it up the first time. I have been very pleased. I am running 2 500Gb Western Digital Sata Drives as One Big Drive Configuration and have not had any problems yet. I did find out that you can Format it NTFS through the standard Windows setup, but if you format it thro...
  • Cons: As mentioned, formatting through the Web Interface is not recommended if you're looking for NTFS. I agree with the others, who have stated that the USB Ports should be able to be used for other devices, besides Flsah Drives and External HD's. The only other Con is the USB Port Transfer Speed is s...

A year later.......

Dave C., Newegg
4 March 2009
  • Summary: An example of how reliable this has been for me is... I recently bought a new router. So as I was switching everything over and configuring the new settings, I accidently unplug the plug from the NAS200. I plugged back in and forgot about it.
  • Pros: This has worked very reliable for me for over a year. I have the latest firmware (Ver.3.4R75) on it. This is a great NAS box for the average household. Think of it as a beginner's NAS box. It only has 32 MB of RAM so it's not a speedster. But it works! It copies and transfers files at a decent sp...
  • Cons: Memory is not upgradeable. There has been no new firmware since 6/08. I mention this because I would like to use this as a Itunes Server. Built in media server didn't work to great. Think that is due to the 32 MB of RAM. So I don't think I would hold high hopes for Itunes server to work even if i...

Great for the price

Eric T., Newegg
31 December 2008
  • Summary: Got this for my wife to store copies of files on. Though it offers a web base interface and "media server" this really is just a compact little FTP server. Get one of the many free FTP clients and use it for saving copies of your files.
  • Pros: Great standalone FTP server, easy installation, compact
  • Cons: Default password wrong in documentation, Web based interface isn't so hot

Unreal expectations

Anonymous, Newegg
29 December 2008
  • Summary: Look people, this unit is for backing up your important files or HDD. In other words if your HDD crashes, you get a new on and restore all the backed up info from this unit. If this unit/HDD dies, replace the HDD or unit and backup your sytem again.
  • Pros: Nice affordable unit for backing up you files or whole HDD via home network/LAN system. Linksys quality.
  • Cons: Not wild about the softwear.

FINE FOR THE MONEY

Barry E., Newegg
12 August 2008
  • Summary: To everyone complaining about the performance you had to have some idea if not due to the price tag associated with the NAS200 then all the reviews posted here that it was not a speed demon. You can't expect to get the world when you pay the price of a cheap hotel room for a two night stay.
  • Pros: The NAS200 is a perfect investment for someone who is budget minded but at the same time wants to protect all of their valuable data. I have been quite pleased with the performance of the 200. It's not a server based storage device so you're not going to experience the speeds you would on a wide ...
  • Cons: The only negative thing about the NAS200 I found was the method used for securing the drives into the device, that could have been a little bit better. However I can accept what they used due to the fact that it is suppose to be a hot swappable device so down time for taking drives out would kind...

Great Product

Anonymous, Newegg
24 June 2008
  • Summary: Overall this is a great device. I plan on getting a few more to reduce the amount of machines I have in my house.
  • Pros: Device worked great. My final solution to cataloging my CD collection. Didn't have problems setting it up at all. Now that is it stationary I can stop carrying an external around with me.
  • Cons: Needs a fan to keep drives cool. Slow to boot up after a power outage.

Great product

Joseph I., Newegg
19 May 2008
  • Summary: Setup and running in less than a half hour using only the web interface. (It took over night to sync the two disks but unit was usable during that time.) Noise problems? The fan on my computer makes more noise. Heat problems?
  • Pros: Small. Low cost. Flexable. Easy to use. I'm using this setup in my home for central file storage. I have five family members and five computers. I never know which computer they are going to let me get on. We could just share folders on each computer but then which computer has what files? All of...
  • Cons: Would like to be able to delete the default Public Data directory. Not a big issue, it's just the visual noise bothers other members of my household. I mapped my directories to a drive letter so they don't see it anymore.

Great little NAS

Frank A., Newegg
7 May 2008
  • Summary: This device is NOT SLOW! It is just as fast as my 8 HP DL380 servers costing $6000 each. The limiting factor is the same - 100mb LAN speeds. The device is not noisey ( but not silent with a 60mm fan) and the exterior is not hot, thought I have not checked the interior.
  • Pros: I had the thing up and running in 30 minutes. Zero issues, easy to set up. The admin setup is great, and allowing the creation of users works very well.
  • Cons: As mentioned: there is a second "type" of login that requires admin: admin. Didn't see that in the instructs but read it here!
