  • Summary: Using two Western Digital Black Edition 750 GB hard drives, configured under JBOD to look like one large hard drive. I have read that this setting does not carry the risk of complete data loss like RAID 0 but it also does not provide redundancy like RAID 1.
  • Pros: Works well and is very customizable. Each new firmware update brings more features and bug fixes. It really just does what it's supposed to do so there's not much point in listing all the pros.
  • Cons: The hard drives get very hot. If you take the back covers off and you touch the hard drives, they can almost burn you. The transfer speed averages 4 MB/s, but that's not a big problem if you're using this for backup or media streaming. It cannot join a domain and use domain credentials; you are f...

Good product

Andy K., Newegg
20 November 2009
  • Summary: Bought this and one 500Gb hdd to backup my music, pictures, etc on and to stream music from. When I first powered it up, the airflow from the fan was quiet enough but the sleeve bearings were louder than I like.
  • Pros: Good value for the money, runs Linux, low power consumption, looks good on shelf with other network equipment. Nice compact size. LED's are not annoyingly bright but still easily seen. Power supply is inline with cord, not a plug in transformer so it won't hog space up on my UPS. Ready to go in m...
  • Cons: Fan in mine was sorta loud, no USB print server,drives/fan don't always shut off like literature says it should.

Update Review

Mr. H., Newegg
1 August 2009
  • Summary: I am looking into expanding my NAS Devices and I am considering this one again for the Scalability and compatibility with the one I already have.
  • Pros: Easy to Setup and Connect to the Network. Still running the Hard Drives as One Large Drive and still have not had any problems with it yet for my Home Network. Web Interface available to setup. Tech Support is really good and knowledgeable. If power is lost to the Unit, then you have to power it ...
  • Cons: USB Connection Slow, Firmware could use an update to offer more options, Documentation did not mention that if you format the drives from the Web Interface you only get FAT32 formatting and if you want to format it with NTFS, then you have to pull the drive up in the Windows Explorer interface an...

I don't repent too much

Anonymous, Newegg
24 April 2009
  • Summary: It could be a very nice device if it only had an extra USB or eSATA connection in order to manage files.
  • Pros: Formats internal disks with XFS which allows storing large files not like many systems limited by the 4GB capacity of FAT32. You can mount disks in a Linux box AFTER FORMATING and manage your files (very easy to insert/remove disks, no tools needed). You can easily map the drives in Linux or Wind...
  • Cons: Poor documentation, very low transfer rates limited to 5MB/s.

Works Well

Anonymous, Newegg
9 March 2009
  • Summary: Overall its a great product for the price, just wish what Linksys said it could do that it really could.
  • Pros: Works very well for easy storage and access. I mainly use the device for storing data such as music and movies and then accessing them from laptops in the house using wireless. Speed is pretty good. Currently have it setup with 2 Segate 1TB drives.
  • Cons: Slow upload to unit and when having to do any work in terms of moving data from one drive to another requires a PC to be present. Linksys states that on the firmware page their is a way to setup for backup from one drive to the other, but I don't see it anywhere.

Basic

Michael H., Newegg
22 February 2009
  • Summary: Most the complaints i see on here are really dumb, like who is putting a high speed drive in a NAS to begin with. Use a green drive and over heating will not be a problem. I can not stress this enough This Device Only Has A 10/100 Connection Putting It On A Gigabyte Switch Will Not Improve Transfer...
  • Pros: Inexpensive, comes with a year or DNS from an outside source, Linksys support, requires little knowledge of what your doing.
  • Cons: Tops out at 4tbs of internal hard drive space. Would of liked an 10/100/1000 Ethernet card but 10/100 is understandable for the price. Kind of weak fan. Will need to have a firmware update done once set up. Video streaming will require the video to be downloaded as a temp so its not really stream...

User Review

Joe H., Newegg
6 January 2009
  • Summary: Some have complained about the noise from the fan and overheating but I have not experienced any of these.
  • Pros: This is a very nice NAS setup. It is easy to install to a system or network and since it will hold 2 1TB drives, it offers a small footprint on a desk or shelf in any office. Also, with the capability to connect to additional USB drives to it, it save using the ports on a Desktop system. Also, wi...

I'm Happy With it

Darrin W., Newegg
17 December 2008
  • Summary: Out of the gate I tried to be fancy with the security settings. I ended up getting all sorts of errors -- mostly I/O errors. I reformatted the drive 4-5 times because I thought there was something wrong. My presumption was there was a problem with either the SATA drive or the file server.
  • Pros: Delivers exactly what it advertises. Installation was simple. The included backup software is extremely easy to use. I bought this unit as a backup device, but planning ahead wanted to be able to access files from another device in my house. The unit is doing exactly what I needed. It backs up my...
  • Cons: The web UI is a little difficult -- for those of us that are not network admin trained, some of the settings are somewhat Greek. Additional help info would be a plus.

After nealy 1 year, working like a champ

Helene W., Newegg
27 November 2008
  • Summary: I think people need to understand that first, this device uses a Linix interface so references to FAT are incorrect. Second, if you use the web interface, then yes it's going to perform slow...do yourself a favor and download some free FTP program and access the device DIRECTLY.
  • Pros: Just works. After nearly 1 year of 24/7 operation, this device works flawlessly. Sure gigabyte NIC would be nice ONLY if you had a gigabyte connection, the vast majority do not. FREE (one Year) Dynamic IP service included (TZO). Scales to your storage needs (Buy the size HD's you need/afford). Wo...

Great Option/Price Combo

Alan M., Newegg
24 November 2008
  • Summary: Device would be awesome and rate a 5 if the NIC was modular too. Would be nice to be able to pull the NIC and install a 10/100/1000 NIC. Because the NIC is 10/100 might not be necessary to install or set SATA drives to 3.0Gb/s.
  • Pros: Modular drives. You are limited to using SATA drives but there are a number of great SATA drive varieties in price and size. Easy to setup physically. Easy to configure through web interface and easy to maintain. DDNS configuration is easy to use througyh TZO.com so you can access your drives and...
  • Cons: NIC interface is 10/100 when a Gigabit would be best to take advantage of the faster drives. Software drivers included for Windows Vista caused me problems after installing. Windows Vista would not shutdown properly when connected to the storage unit and drivers installed. When not connected to t...
