Good for the Price

Russian W., Newegg
28 February 2010
  • Summary: The first thing you should do is get the newest firmware from the german site v.4241. It provides a bit of added functionality over the the firmware included on the disk. Shove one drive in and let it configure that (no raid). Then update the firmware.
  • Pros: It work well. With the included software it had very easy to set up and use. Sometimes you have to check the LED screen to see that its still on and working because its quieter than most devices. I've installed 4x 1.5 SAMSUNG EcoGreen F2 1.5TB and got 4.02 TB in Raid 5. I could have used faster/l...
  • Cons: You need patience with this NAS. If the message on the LED screen reads anything other than "Enjoy LG-NAs...." walk away..its going to be a while. Reboots take 40+ seconds and raid 5 config with 4TB took 25+ hours. Its definitely no speed demon. Speed depends on the drives installed. With my setu...

Good bang for the buck

Mariano d., Newegg
22 February 2010
  • Summary: The Blue-ray drive is nice but not a must have, backing-up to an external drive is probably faster and cheaper. A Twonky server instead of an iTunes server would be nice. Also a BitTorrent client. The good firmware is hard to find, LG should synchronize the US and the German sites.
  • Pros: Support for large drives, I have installed 4x2TB (5.37TB in RAID 5), the unit detected and used the drives without problems. I was concerned since the manual shows 1TB as the largest drive size. Can read UPS status for a controlled shut down in case of power loss. Blue-ray burner, for the price o...
  • Cons: Drive synchronization takes forever, almost two days. So if a drive goes bad plan to have the unit working in the rebuild for this long. (Smaller RAID will take less time) Only 128MB of memory, this will limit what could be loaded in the unit. Network speed could be better. User's rights can't be...

Just too many problems.

Lester L., Newegg
21 February 2010
  • Summary: I really wanted to like this machine, but there are just too many issues. It's unreliable, and that just isn't good for data.
  • Pros: Attractive looking NAS.
  • Cons: It just didn't work. I tried building volumes using various firmware versions. Out of 2x Samsung HD103SI and 2x WD 10EAD, my unit would only build volumes with one of each brand disk (but never both Samsungs or both WDs). So it played well with one of each disk, but not all 4. The disks themselve...

5 Stars now that Telnet is accessible

Ed L., Newegg
15 February 2010
  • Summary: I think that now that I have access to the Command line via Telnet the Sky is the limit with Possibilities. Just make sure you go into /etc/init.d/rcS and take away the REM statement for the Telnet Daemon. Also make sure in /etc/sudoers file you give full root access to admin.
  • Pros: Now that I have Telnet root access this Product gets 5 stars. It's Clean, It's Quiet, and is easy to install. I have it connected to a 1 GIG Backbone Full Duplex. the BueRay Image Disk allows you to Burn Images too the Drives and Also from Drives to the Disk. the ESATA does not work well from the...
  • Cons: HORRIBLE... HORRIBLE... Support from US. German Site is where you get Latest firmware. Have to search on Google easier to find "n4b1 firmware". The Support team doesn't have a clue about the Product.

Now with NFS and DLNA

CHRISTOPHER K., Newegg
12 February 2010
  • Summary: Hopefully, they will share the firmware updates on the US site soon.
  • Pros: I purchased 4 2TB drives to pair w/ the enclosure to act as a quiet media server. Powered it up and it works as expected. Ultimately, I wanted NFS support, and after finding the German support site (search for 'n4b1 firmware' and look for lge.com/de/support in the url), I see that the 4241 update...
  • Cons: After finding the German firmware that provides DLNA and NFS, none!

Great with DDNS

Luen H., Newegg
4 February 2010
  • Summary: I wish I can get that German site URL posted. I haven't found the correct URL to update my Firmware, any post will be great.
  • Pros: Great item, bought two of them just because it was on sale. was 299 with 1 TB HDD. Unit works great now have it on 4TB Jbod. Haven't tested the BD-Burner yet. DDNS works great, make sure you have turn on all the Ports on your router you can control this unit over anywhere else. I am currently acc...
  • Cons: The manual is almost no use. If you wouldl like to find out more, Google it and you will see a lot of people post trick on how to set up DDNS and other stuff.

Great system!

Christopher H., Newegg
1 February 2010
  • Summary: Definitly worth buying while on sale, but too expensive when full price. Theres better systems out there at $500, but at $300 it can't be beat!
  • Pros: Blu-ray Burner, Interface is fine, Easy to use, Once you finsh setting up its pretty fast. I actually bought this on sale for $300 with a free 1TB drive. The deal was too good to pass up. You can't use the Blu-ray burner for anything but storage while its in the NAS. I wasn't using it for storage...
  • Cons: Could be faster. I have mine on a Gigabit switch so my raid 0 array (only 2 1TB drives at the moment) Reads at about 40-50MB/s and write about 20-30MB/s. I'm happy with the read speed but it would be nice if the write speed was faster. Also its even slower if you try to transfer a bunch of stuff ...

Beware of item

Randy S., Newegg
30 January 2010
  • Pros: the item sounded good and that was about it
  • Cons: the item powered on and gave a kernel error service code 1a_00 the blu-ray drive wouldn't open and according to lg tech support not many drives compatible with this unit. I have tried two of these units same results. Hats off to newegg for their eggelent customer service

Good NAS with lots of features

Boris C., Newegg
29 January 2010
  • Summary: Pretty happy with my purchase.
  • Pros: Works great as a NAS. Well built and good looking. Firmware updates add functionality. Can use as a Time Machine backup, rsync client/server, NFS...etc. Can share USB and eSATA on the network. Backing up important files to BluRay is a plus. Read speed is good.
  • Cons: Writes are kinda slow ~ 10-12MB/s on a gigabit network.

A good NAS for a Great Price

John C., Newegg
26 January 2010
  • Summary: The speed is not bad in RAID 5. It is as fast as my old Iomege 500mb NAS as certainly more reliable with the configuration I chose.
  • Pros: This device is very simple to setup. Just plug in the drives and pop in the dvd into the blu-ray drive and away you go. It takes a while to set up. For me it was about 15 hours includng the firmware update which is a must and the setup for 3 1tb drives in raid 5.
  • Cons: The device does not have the bells and whistles of the new NAS from LG including the dlna server and I believe the bit torret download capabilities. These are available on other similiar devices so I hope that the firmwire based on linux will be upgraded to include the options.
