Good for the $

Anonymous, Newegg

  • Summary: For those who still are upset about the lack of support for the legacy authentication methods for AFP on OSX Lion, you can re-enable DHCAST-128 authentication in OSX Lion and the server will work just fine. Works just like it did before with my MacbookPro over AFP.
  • Pros: Good NAS unit for the money. DLNA works great and transfer speeds are very good, especially over a gigabit network.
  • Cons: Documentation is lacking at best. Took me a little while to figure out that the disks had to be configured before you could install a firmware update (thought it kept failing for no reason). Would like to have gotten another firmware update out of LG to fix the AFP authentication issue with OSX L...

Satisfied

  • Summary: Don't expect to get 2TB drives to work on this device. The list that I received of compatible drives had only three 2TB drive types that were compatible. The only one I could find was WAY too expensive since it was limited quantity.
  • Pros: Has high transfer rates and has seamless DLNA streaming. Also communicated with the UPS to shut down when the power gets low. The CD-ROM is also a nice touch
  • Cons: Can't change admin name. Weak documentation. Would have been nice if it told me that I needed to load drives and configure a share before I could update the firmware (since it needs a place to unpackage it at). Also, I am dissapointed at the poor support for 2TB drives (very few are supported and...

Does NOT work with OSX Lion

John G., Newegg
18 November 2011
  • Summary: If you're an OSX user, stay clear until there's newer firmware! Very disappointing that LG released Lion-compatible firmware for other devices, but not the N2R1.
  • Pros: Works pretty well as a NAS, decent web interface, lots of features.
  • Cons: Still doesn't support OSX Lion; the AFP authentication isn't backwardly compatible. New firmware was supposed to be out in Septemper 2011, but as of November, still no new firmware for this model. Time machine and regular Apple file sharing is broken; you can still us SMB, but it's not convenient...

Works great! But...

RICHARD A., Newegg
25 August 2011
  • Summary: If you do your homework and match up good hardware to this unit, you can't beat the price for nice home media server and backup unit.
  • Pros: For the price, this unit is awesome! It has the ability to hold 2 - 2tb hard drives (please check LG's hardware compatibility list). It comes with the ability to serve up your media flawlessly and works on our network that has both Windows & Mac computers.
  • Cons: This is an older model unit and most of the hard drives and other items listed on LG's compatibility list are outdated and are no longer available! Be careful, because while there are few items left that will work, don't assume the HDs you have will!

LG N2R1D Diskless System Super Multi NAS with DVD ReWriter

Anonymous, Newegg
28 June 2011
  • Summary: They should offer other colors as most my other stuff is black or silver. Need better documentation for sure! Returned a Seagate BlackArmor NAS 110 for this and I'm glad I did, this has so much more flexability!!! Reasonable price as I said before but would have liked a free HDD.
  • Pros: Basic use set up was easy and quick! Tons of extra features software wise! Hardware appears sturdy, classy and overall just a nice unit! 2 HDD bay's! Memory slots, USB slot's. Nice LCD and DVD writer. I think Price is reasonable.
  • Cons: Documentation was almost completely useless! There are sooo many features but not enough info to let you know what every thing is. software did not recognize DVD writer so I have to figure that out, only local writer was recognized from my PC.

Good NAS

Geoffrey P., Newegg
20 May 2011
  • Summary: I have not tried connecting an external drive to it or using the selective mirror funtionality. Nor have I used the DVD Burner. I like the idea of being able to burn a DVD from it though.
  • Pros: Good price and supports RAID 1 which is what I was mainly looking for. Not to hard to setup on the network and getthe drive configured. I connected the USB port on the APC UPS to it and it shutdown when the battery gets low.
  • Cons: The print server did not work, worked for a few days and now does not work with a HP LaserJet P1006 and various versions of windows. I even tried using the HP LaserJet PCL driver instead of the P1006 specfic one and it did not work. I tried it because LG knowledgebase said onlt PCL printers are s...

Works good / description incorrect

Pamela K., Newegg
1 May 2011
  • Pros: Easy to set up and use. Software was designed more thoughtfully than usually found on these types of devices. Corners were not cut in the development of this product.
  • Cons: Description says: "Three high-speed USB 2.0 ports are used for connections to your favorite high-speed flash storage devices for network storage expansion or data backup." This is absolutely incorrect. There are three USB ports, but they cannot be used for expansion. The box will back up your USB...

Works great!

MICHAEL H., Newegg
3 March 2011
  • Summary: Got it for personal use, does exactly what I need it to and a whole lot more! Note: if you have a NetGear switch you may have to power-cycle the switch to get 1Gb connection speed. (Not putting this in the Cons as this is probably not LG fault, NetGear doesn't always auto-negotiate very well).
  • Pros: Handles multiple TimeMachine backups, WebDav, AFP etc no problem. Super easy to get up and running. Mine shipped w/current firmware (2569) so had none of the setup/UI problems others have posted below.
  • Cons: Fan is a little louder than I was hoping for, though my home office is very small and quiet. Also a few people have mentioned the write speed is a bit slow and I can confirm that at least for my RAID1 configuration, even at 1Gb w/jumbo frames. Not a problem for the intended purpose of being a bac...

So far, so sweet

John D., Newegg
24 February 2011
  • Summary: paired with (2) Samsung Spinpoint 2TB 5400 RPM drives (Newegg product N8E16822152245) in Raid 1. Took less than an hour to initialize array and start transferring! Haven't done the DLNA setup for PS3 goodness, or used the print server function, but LG has a list of printers on their website if you...
  • Pros: Connected the device to a switch downstream on the network and performance was BAD. Moved device to router, and performance is good - even to a device that's connected via that switch. getting 9+ MB/s on 10/100 network. (I actually think that the aforementioned switch is a piece of junk, and will...
  • Cons: This thing is slow to boot, and slow to apply changes, but as long as you aren't tinkering with settings all the time, that should be a non-issue.

Good Value, but needs better manual

Kenton J., Newegg
21 February 2011
  • Summary: I purchased with 1TB. I chose to replace with 2 500GB hard drive and format 1TB as backup. (Why?) I had 2 500GB extra drives that matched the compatibility for this device (I checked compatibility-make sure you do) Switching the disk drive did not go well at first.
  • Pros: -Good Price -RAID 1 capable -DVD Burner (nice way to export data for backups)
  • Cons: -NAS Manual not clear (Main issue) Download manual LG_2DriveNAS.pdf from LG Support -Firmware update needed. (Suggested) -Difficult to update without having to reconnect to device. (Time, IP, Workgroup/Domain Network, most settings) -Buggy software (Web browser interface, and firmware)
