Summary: This drive is plug and play if you hook up the usb from the back. If you want to use it as a NAS with the ethernet cable you need to install the LaCie Network Assistant that comes with the drive. On Mac OSX the utility resides in the icon tray and the drop down allows you to wake up the device, quit the assistant, configure the device and see the shares you have on the devices.
Summary: I have used this drive both on the network and with a direct connection. Both worked as expected. I did not attempt to use the bundled software, because it's often buggy and I have better apps to accomplish the same tasks. As a piece of hardware, it works. If you're looking for a "backup solution", the other reviewers seem to have more to say.
Summary: We didn't know a lot about this product previously, but the description seemed to fit our current needs as a media server. Although the device works well with our Vista laptop, the same is not true for our Windows 7 one, so that was a bit frustrating. I do realize that there is a software fix available --Genie Pro, which should remedy this.
Summary: This NAS works great for backing up my PC's and Mac with sno leopard. Also it works great as a media server for all computers. Ive been very satisfied once I got it to work. Just had to run application on 1 computer to set up. Time machine was so easy, just a click on a box. The only problem I have is that it runs very hot. I had to make sure nothing flammable around. Actually runs cooler if set up on its side.
Summary: March, 2012 update: My network space 2 is still running perfectly. I got at least 3 firmware upgrades and 4 for interface software. I really like the support that LaCie is offering and more importantly the continuous improvements they are making. Sep 22' 2010 Update' I got the driver upgrades (from Lacie website) a few weeks ago. The drive now can stop down (no spinning noise) after a few minutes' idle, which could lead to longer life span and reduced failure rate.
Summary: Elegant and modern case. It is possible to connect an external HDD through USB port that can double your hard drive space. I love the stand alone torrent server as well the itunes server features. You can backup the usb memory as well your PC files in a customized ocurrence and can be configured to energy saving setup This is a great product that I really recommend. The configuration interface of this device is 8/10 due to it is not that intuitive and user friendly.
Summary: The key is that you must use this first in networked mode to set up the USB partitions, which I must have missed it from the instructions. Very compact unit otherwise and good transfer speed. but i must say it took me hours to get it to work. Another major issue is that it is quite unclear when the unit is up and running or not from the blue LED.
Worked Reliably For 18 Months - But Not Expandable
15 November 2013
Summary: After so many early reviews that may have contained some knee-jerk initial comments, I'd thought I'd wait a while before commenting, so 18mths later (and probably too late as the product may be discontinued :-(, I can honestly say that this product has been very reliable, always been available on the home network (i.e. never had a dropped connection) and is accessed daily to stream films and music from all around the house.
Summary: In general OK. Doesn't make too much noise, has energy save mode and appears on the network 9-8 out of 10 times when switched on. That's the only issue with it I found - sometimes when switched on, my laptop (Win 7) won't connect to it but a basic "switch it off and on again" seems to fix it every time. I recommend you download the latest version of LaCie software from their website to have access to a custom control panel for the drive.
Summary: It is perfect if you want to have one place to save all your backups but consider that you don't need this kind of product if your router has one usb port. You can buy a cheap portable disk and connect it to your router for the same purpose.
