slow and steady

  • Summary: You get what you pay for. Low price, large drive, slow speed.
  • Pros: Very easy setup. I do not use DHCP, I assign my ip addresses and after reading the manual, I was able to use the web based interface, assign an IP, and set it up very easy. I'm sure DHCP would have been quicker and easier but it's great to be able to do it either way.
  • Cons: Not very fast. Ethernet connection too slow to be useable. My old full backup over the network took 4 hours. Using drivestation, this did not complete in over 24 hours.

  • Summary: I know that it does not have a lot of network features, but it is a simple cheap drive that is basically plug and play, perfect for simple office/home backup/storage device.
  • Pros: Needed to replace a network drive that is used for backup. Pulled it out of the box, plugged into an ethernet connection and it was ready to go.
  • Cons: If there has to be a con...you have to select usb/ethernet as it does not detect. Really, there are no cons. Cheap with low expectations.

  • Summary: Unless you really are looking for an external USB drive that have some ethernet functions, get the BUFFALO LS-C500L instead.
  • Pros: Got both USB and Ethernet ports.
  • Cons: Very limited NAS functions. Multiple groups with different passwords NOT allowed. You can NOT view your files over the internet using BuffaloNAS.com
