The tiny Asus Eee PC uses a 4 or 8GB solid state hard drive and fits in the palm of your hand. Ultra-portable notebooks are often very expensive, but not the Linux-based Asus Eee PC. This little sub-notebook costs a mere $400 USD – a price anyone can appreciate. To get there Asus had to trim all the fat, including Windows, out of the equation, but the result is a notebook that is highly portable, easy to use and even – dare we say – kind of cool? Read more

    • Decent battery life; highly portable; lots of useful software
    • Tiny keyboard is hard to type on; screen is very small; system is not for everyone

Perhaps the biggest concern with regard to the Eee PC 900 is price.  In comparison to the 700 series, the Eee PC 900's $549 price tag is easily justified - the unit has a bigger screen, more memory, and much more storage.  But at that price, the Eee PC must compete with much higher performing, larger machines, that also offer more storage and integrated optical drives.  Currently, there are a host of 14.1" to 15.4" notebooks with more memory and storage available at Read more

ASUS pioneered the low-cost laptop frontier with its Eee PC 701. This trailblazer, now competing against more polished competition such as HP’s Mini-Note, seeks to maintain its lead with the Eee PC 900. This $549 mini-notebook addresses its predecessor’s drawbacks by including a larger, higher-resolution 8.9-inch screen and more storage space. Read more

Asus’ long-awaited 9-inch (well, 8.9-inch) version of its groundbreaking Eee PC 4G arrives with all the familiar trappings installed. But this time it’s a little bigger — in more ways than one. Not only is the screen bumped up from seven inches to nine, the RAM is doubled (from 512 MB to 1 GB), the solid state storage system jumps from 4 GB to 20 GB, and the price takes a leap, hitting the $550 mark. I like this model Asus EEE because it has 1GB of memory vs some other Asus EEE900 models with only 512 MB and it has the 16 GB SSD storage vs others with only 4-8 GB. That being said, this netbook boots up quickly to the Desktop but hesitates slightly after that before you can go to the Internet. Once you get to the Web Sites, it moves along well. Read more

I purchased this small notebook for traveling on business trips. I can place all of my work on a 4 GB SD card and keep it in the EEEPC's integrated card reader. The wireless network connections are not rapid, but seldom problematic. I use Gmail to check my emails. I use a plugged-in headset to take advantage of making Skype phone calls. I have not found a way to enable a bluetooth adapter with this model, so I'm disappointed in the inability to use a bluetooth headset. Read more

I am reviewing just to let people know that you can install Windows 7 on this, even though the CPU speed and HD capacity fall short of specs. I didn't need any tweaks, except to manually install the OEM video driver. I got no error message on the CPU. Be sure to select the larger of the two SSDs. Windows 7 Ultimate, without any action on my part, squeezed itself onto an 8GB drive, using only half of the space! Read more

    • This was, I believe, the first Netbook to be sold with Windows (XP) installed. For its time, it was cool. It comes with an SSD.
    • I only gave it two stars because it is so out of date. The Celeron processor and the SSD are very slow compared to today's netbooks. Otherwise, there is nothing wrong ...

the 16 gb was the lousy 900 model right from the get go. Asus dumped it after it received tons of complaints. went to the 12gb ssd smaller but twice as fast. I replaced my 16 with a aftermarket 8gb and it is fast as anything. The tect dept at Asus NOW says the 16gb is realy for Linux and XP or anything else runs best with the smaller 12g or the slugest 20gb. Asus Eee PC 900

The Asus Eee PC 900 is the updated version of the Asus Netbook, Eee PC 701. It has an 8.9 in LCD screen with a resolution of 1,024 x 600 pixels, with more storage, more memory, a multi-touch touchpad, 1.3 megapixel webcam and wireless capabilities. It has built-in stereo speakers. This netbook is said to perform faster than its predecessor. It is in the size of a hard book with dimensions of Width 8.9 in, Depth 6.7 in, Height 1.3 in and weighing at 999g. The Eee PC 900 can last approximately three hours on its standard battery.

Features

The 8.9-inch display has a native resolution of 1,024 x 600 pixels which is significantly higher than the 800x480-pixel screen on the old 7-inch model. The Eee 900’s screen and high resolution allow most web pages to fit on the display, with no need for horizontal scrolling. The vertical viewing angle and the horizontal tilt need to be adjusted to get a perfect picture. However, the horizontal viewing angle is wide enough to allow two users to watch a DivX movie side by side. The speakers are at the bottom of the system, below the wrist rest. The mouse track pad has a wide aspect ratio to match that of the screen. The left and right selector buttons sport a silver finish making it easier to press. The track pad allows you to scroll horizontally and vertically through documents by swiping two fingers up or down across the surface of the track pad. You can also zoom in or zoom out of pictures by making pinching or stretching movement with your fingers. The Asus Eee PC 900 uses the same Intel Celeron 900MHz CPU as the old 701, but with the backing of 1GB of DDR 400 RAM, which is twice as much as its predecessor. The amount of storage on the Eee PC 900 depends on whether it is a Linux version or Windows XP as an operating system. The Linux model comes with a 20GB of storage whereas the Windows XP model has just 12GB. However, the SD card reader accepts SDHC cards which allows up to 32GB of additional storage. The Asus Eee PC 900 supports flash memory cards, such as Multimedia Card, SDHC Memory Card and SD Memory Card. Both versions of the Eee PC 900 use Samsung flash memory chips rather than an actual off-the-shelf hard disk drive.
