A better starter violin

Michael J, amazon.com

  • Summary: I purchased this violin for my wife for Christmas as she has been wanting to learn the violin for years. Its hard to find fair reviews online but after some digging I was relatively confident in my purchase. Overall I have to say this is a great value purchase for a mid-level violin for an adult to start on. Critiques below. Sound - According to the instructor the violin has very good tone for its price range.

A horrible violin shaped object marketed as quality

  • Summary: I work on (and make) violins so have seen lots of different types and makes. Stentors on the whole make my teeth itch.... Stentor are a company that generally make starter violins. Like "Skylark" were in the 1970's, their main customers are usually fraught parents of children who want to learn an instrument for 3 weeks before getting bored... You can easily identify the parents of these children who are learning on a Stentor violin.
  • Pros: Makes a great frisbee
  • Cons: Everything .  save your money .

Brilliant quality violin at a very reasonable price.

  • Summary: This violin came in perfect condition and with the bridge already in the correct position (some manufacturers pack the violins with the bridge flat) and when played made a lovely sound. So far it has served me well (much better than my previous). The violin arrived soon after ordering and came with free rosin!

Great for the Beginner!

  • Summary: As I discovered recently, choosing a first Violin isn’t all that easy, certainly not as easy as say a first Electric Guitar. There hundreds of makes to choose from, but the two most commonly recommended I found were Primavera and Stentor. I purchased the Stentor Conservatoire and so far I have not been disappointed in any way whatsoever. Although it is not the highest quality instrument, it is certainly good value for money and has a nice look and feel to it.
  • Pros: Good value, nice instrument
  • Cons: Bow lets the outfit down a little
