Summary: Not a good buy. Expensive cartridges. Scanner quit working within two weeks. We have several printers and seem to have more problems with the HP printers. The cartridges are not only expensive they don't seem to last as long as those in some other brands.
Excerpt: Hardware was excellent buy at Staples $199 price. Like the 8500, the 8600 supports Wireless and Ethernet; but where 8500 supported both at same time, 8600's ethernet disables wireless. The additional tray may come in handy -- a good buy at $20 more on sale; not so sure at $100 difference off sale. Print quality is excellent. HP warranty may be problematic.
Summary: I have always purchased HP laser printers and they are work horses that seem to last forever in the office and the home. I decided to purchase a color printer this time and went with 8600 911N. Purchased it in Mar 2013, warranty ran out in Sep 2013, went tits up in Apr 2014. I get a message that there is a paper jam, I have been all through the printer and there is no stray paper in there anywhere. Went through the complete HP sugggeste fixes - nothing.
Summary: After assembly, I plugged it in and after cartridge initialization and user settings were input, it just worked. So why am I only giving it 2 stars? It's because this was a replacement for the HP 8500 which just stopped working after two years. It was cheaper to buy a new one than to fix the old one. Plus the cost of cartridges are so high that this whole system of printing is just flawed.
Summary: While the printer seems to be doing a good job of printing right now I have had problems with it since I RECEIVED IT. Right from the start the printing was bad and fuzzy. After spending 1-1/2 hours on the phone with HP tech services, 4 different people, they sent me a new print head and that solved the problem. Now, and I have only had the printer about 60 days, the automatic paper feed on the top crumbles all the paper that is put into it and will not feed.
Excerpt: This model prints beautifully and makes good copies. However, there is a hardware issue involving the control panel which prohibits any function other than printing. Of course, it is out of warranty. HP is aware that this has been a problem for years and has done nothing to address it. Take out a two-year warranty if you buy this product. Very disappointed in HP.
Pros: Doesn't Jam, Easy to Use, Fast, Easy to Set Up, Performance
Excerpt: This printer makes good quality prints, copies and photos quickly. However it seems like the regular HP 8600 does virtually the same things for about half price. Consumer Reports has also noted that the 8600 models waste a lof of ink priming themselves. My biggest problem is that the wireless connection needs to be reset about once a week. Even when I can print wirelessly I can't run the scan feasture without using the HP printer doctor app.
Excerpt: although HP says the full printer driver installation will provide "everything" required to run MAC OS 10.9 (Mavericks) software, in fact PREVIEW quits immediately if you attempt to use it to scan documents with the printer. This is a major inconvenience for me.
