Summary: This is a very versatile machine. The "HP Director" which has an icon installed on your desktop, is a super wizard type tool, that will allow you to select any function of the machine; copy, scan, print, fax, and walk you through the steps for whatever job; includes a photo editor to polish up...

XP Compliant Software not available till +/- April 2002
23 May 2003
Summary: UPDATE (June 1, 2002): Still no Integrated XP compliant software from HP!!! ORIGINAL REVIEW: If you intend to purchase the G85 and are using Windows XP as your operating system, be aware that full functional software is not available from HP until probably April 2002.
Summary: If you're a Mac user, don't waste your money and time on this device. I've had one for 6 months, and have had nothing but problems with it, mostly related to the print driver and communications driver. The software has been very buggy. There have been at least 3 updates in the last 6 months.
Summary: I bought a g85 about 14 months ago, and the document feeder did not work. HP shipped me another one, which was a refurb, and that also did not work. So I got a third refurb, all within 3 months of purchase. Now, the firmware on the printer has gone bad. This after I purchased brand new cartridges.
Cream of the Crop Printer, Scanner, Copier and Fax
Gina Novelle, Amazon
21 May 2003
Summary: I give this printer the highest rating. It is my favorite printer second to my HP LaserJet. The G85 is fast, has a great scanner, and best of all, it holds and prints 50 post cards. That's right, you can purchase US post cards at post office for only 25 cents.
Summary: Macintosh users! This is NOT the printer for you. Constant communications problems. Don't even try to use it with an iBook or PowerBook. Every time your computer sleeps or the USB is unplugged, or for just any old reason, the printer will lock up your whole system.
Summary: I had a Brother 7150C that died in less than 2 years. I really did not like it that much anyway, very noisy, and VERY slow on copies and printing. I did my research, and the HP G85 came out on top in all catergories. The print speed and quality are amazing. The flat bed gives me many more options.
Summary: As of today, this unit is still not fully compatible with Windows XP. You cannot use the included drivers with Windows XP, and you must use the Windows drivers which takes away alot of the dessigned crossover functions with the computer.
Summary: This product looks like it does it all. Perhaps it does from a Windows environment; I couldn't say. However, the Macintosh driver software is incredibly flaky. Typically, I can only print a few pages at a time before having to (1) restart the printer, (2) restart the print server (I use it...
Summary: 1. The fax feeder SUCKS. I need to stand there and make sure every sheet feeds and doesn't jam. 2. The printer works fine except when you make multiple prints or copies (i.e. more than 1) because the first sheet doesn't get dropped efficiently and actually gets caught in the mechanism as the next...
