Excerpt: I have had this printer for about 2 years I bought it on sale for under $50 bucks. At the time I thought it was a steal because it had a fax and a scanner in addition to the copier and printer. I soon found out that it tends to jam frequently and I never use the scanner and I wish I had bought a flat printer where I could copy things like my id. Please don't try this I did once and it jammed up and I almost break my id as well as the printer.
Excerpt: We had the HP 4315 All In One Series for about three years. It worked well for just basic printing purposes, but we ended up buying a new printer recently to save on ink costs and to go wireless. Like I said, if you are just doing light printing and faxing, it serves a great purpose. However, I print a lot of coupons and so I was going through a lot of ink that was getting expensive and the print quality was poor. The bar codes on the coupons often weren't readable,...
The machine can be folded into a small unit for travel.

Excerpt: The HP Officejet 4315 all-in-one is a compact machine useful for light jobs. It is top-loading, which makes it difficult to scan or copy a page in a periodical or a book. The ink cartridges are good, but not great as the black will allow for many more sheets to be printed than the color. At the end of one year, noises start to make themselves heard, and begin to rumble and make ojectionble cranks.
Summary: Not worth the full price advertised but does the job for quick printouts. Also I did not pay this price originally. Ink price is reasonable $13.00 to 19.00 per cartridge and depending on where you shop. Good for quick printouts, goes through lots of ink though, screen very difficult to read, would be nice if it was backlit for easier reading. At least I don't feel like I'm paying more for the ink than the printer.
Summary: The first HP Officejet I bought back in 1996 cost me almost $700. It was 3x bigger than this one, black & white only, and crapped out after about 3 yrs. This version, the 4315, also crapped out after about 3 yrs. But it only cost me about $107 with tax. So, in the grand scheme of things, that's not too bad. $35/yr for a printer / fax / copier.
Summary: I have had this printer for about 2 years and then suddenly I started getting error messages like the paper was jammed when there was no jam. Lately it has been non-functional since I keep getting the message that the carriage can't move and that I should clear the obstruction. Of course there is no obstruction. The ink gauge is inaccurate but I have gotten use to it. I can get weeks or months of printing done after the low ink message comes on.
Summary: Haven't had any problems with it not working, but fax feature wasn't compatible with my DSL service, which is the main reason I bought it. And you can only scan and copy single pages--not helpful if you find something in a book you want to copy.
Summary: I used this primarily for printing, and sometimes as a scanner and it worked fine. However, after less than a year it just stopped feeding the paper. Can't get the rollers to roll the paper through (tried everything, different size papers, etc). It's not worth the cost to get it fixed, so will probably get a different brand.
Summary: I have now had this printer for a few months and can say the print quality is good. Scanning works well. The buttons on the front provide quick access to scanning. I cannot comment on fax performance and I imagine copying performance is similar to scanning, which works well. I have a Mac with Mac OS X Leopard and I find the included HP software is over-complicated and confusing at times (I am a software developer, not a computer neophyte).
Summary: The product is easy to use but if you are using it on a desktop it takes up a lot of room, not in its foot print but in the space it takes when the leaves are open for the feeder and the printed pages. Printing speed is slow and the ink carts are used up quickly. If you are not a frequent faxer it's fine and you dont need many copies as well. This machine is meant for light use not an office machine.
