Intuit Checks are a no-go
Summary: Let's be clear: If you don't print Quicken/Intuit checks, this would seem to be a very fine printer. Text is clear, colors are very good. Speed is decent. If you print Intuit checks however, be forewarned: This machine cannot handle single checks. The size of a single check is too small to make it through the MPF to the printer drum. This, for me, makes this printer a pass. My previous Brother had no such issues.
Summary: I wasn't quite satisfied with the scanner quality. I've written a detailed report about the issues here: http://theonemanitdepartment.wordpress.com/2013/11/29/hp-laserjet-400-m475dn-scan-quality-review/ Basically, it fails to pick up light gray values, and has rainbow distortions on some scans.
Pros: The printer is ok, and if you don't have high scanner-expectations, the scanner is ok.
Cons: I wasn't quite satisfied with the scanner quality. I've written a detailed report about the issues here: http://theonemanitdepartment.wordpress.com/2013/11/29/hp-laserjet-400-m475dn-scan-quality-review/
Summary: I've been an HP person for many years in terms of printers and computers, but I have to say that I think the quality control is falling off. This printer just doesn't feel sturdy even though it's in the higher end price wise. If I'm printing a multi page doc, sometimes it will freeze up and not finish for 20 minutes or so. Print quality itself is fine and the machine could be so awesome but it's just not there.
Summary: Life altering is how my Business partner referred to this printer. It does everything perfectly. It's quiet efficient. And best of all. You can use the generic toners and save a BUNDLE on operational Costs.
Summary: Spent 15 hours on tech support chat with HP and Norton trying to get this working. We never did and I had to send it back for a refund. Could not load the software (I have a new high powered computer) and keep the computer running. Had multiple blue screen drops. Lost access to the Internet when it conflicted with Norton, once got the computer working could never get the software loaded and the printer working.
Summary: HP printer setup software makes network setup and configuration very strait forward. Setting up scan to folder and email was very simple. Toner change is very user friendly. The print quality color registration is spot on. I have worked on printers of all sizes from small office to production printers. For the price and size of this printer is typical High HP quality. It is not the first HP for our church and wont be the last.
Summary: I have been a loyal customer of HP ever since I purchased my first 12C calculator in the 1980s so when I purchased this MFC I expected it to last at least as long as my other HP LaserJet products (7-10 years or more with proper maintenance). In roughly 19 months the NIC card failed, rendering this an expensive and heavy paperweight that seconds as a copier. I can't connect a computer to it because the USB connector is on the same board as the Ethernet port.
Summary: This printer arrived 3 day ahead of the estimated ship date. The product was, as advertised and I had no issues installing it and setting up the eprint and scan to email functions. The one issue I still have is the scan to folder option. I'm on a domain and for some reason I cannot get the printer to see any of the shared drives, so I am not able to make that feature work correctly.
