Summary: I upgraded my computer from Windows 7 to Windows 8 Pro. This printer would print fine, but the scan function was not installed. It was determined to be a bug in the upgrade process. I had to refresh Windows 8 Pro from the recovery disc (apps are recovered, desktop programs all need to be reinstalled). I downloaded the HP 4.3 full function software from the HP website and did a save only.
Summary: Works as it should in most circumstances but is not totally compatible with Windows 7. Having to write a minimum amount of words to satisfy ebay is why a lot of reviews don't get written. Is this enough yet?
Summary: Got this printer for $10 AS-IS with the note that it freezes after a print job. Installed it while writing this. Hey, there is a "new" firmware out which can be downloaded from HP, the driver suite will also get it automatically during install. Reading through other reviews: I do NOTE use the FAX function, cannot test it. Install is done, unit printed a test page over the network and still reacts to my input. Network scanning 'works' from my own PC.
Summary: I have owned this printer for over four years and have never had any issues with it except for the occasional paper jams. I realize there are a lot of negative reviews but as far as I'm concerned this printer is flawless.
Summary: I don't know what has happened to HP. They used to make well rounded good products. Now they make disposable half-assed products. This one is great as a multifunction printer/scanner/fax if you leave it on your desk. It prints fast, it scans with quality, and has all the other features you should expect from a multifunction product. The Problem is: as a Networked Device it falls flat. My company purchased one including the added "MFP" Network compatibility.
Summary: I have now gone through 2 of these. Each dying a few months after the warranty expired. When they work they are good. The only problem being the fairly expensive toner cartridges. But after a year or two, they start to get unreliable. They lose the network connection and you have to cycle the power and restart before you can send print jobs to them. My latest one has done this for a month or two, now it just turns itself off at random times.
Summary: I have owned several HP Laser Jet printers, all of them outstanding. This one is a lemon. Within one year, the fax component stopped feeding. I sent it back for repairs. After three months, the machine would freeze and not work. HP business support was no help. This is an unreliable machine and a disgrace to HP's name.
It's a Good Printer. HP replaced shortly after a year. Things are working fine once again.

Summary: I use Linux and rarely use Windows. I know Windows software/drivers are terrible updating as you can never tell if you need to fully uninstall older software or just install over it. With Linux, I just use CUPS and things just work. I also have installed the additional hplip (linux drivers) for printing (not needed as it prints Postscript Level 2) and scanning (binary driver). The hplip drivers, with qt/kde/gnome features compiled in, are bloat to me.
