Summary: Bought partly because it says it will print to my iphone. But must buy 50 dollar accessory. Then, after waiting weeks for accessory and spending hours trying to make it work, told no good for iphone 4s, most popular phone in the country. [no `` airprint'' phones] Despite high resolution setting, provides very weak pdfs of docs. When you need to copy a photo, you must use the bottom tray, where you are told not to put photo paper.
Summary: I was having trouble replacing the ink cartridge and left it loosely in the carriage. The machine decided to try to move the carriage from replacement position to somewhere else. Result: the carriage jammed under a ledge with the loose cartridge and shrieked like a tortured cat trying to move. The ink cartridge would not come out even after I got the carriage moved back to middle position. Then the whole carriage came lose because I pulled too hard on the ink cartridge.
Summary: I was very happy with the Canon MX870 for the first few months, when I was using the original cartridges, and would have given it a glowing recommendation, like so many you see here. However, it has been a complete PITA after I replaced the ink cartridges (with new Canon cartridges). Almost every time, the printer claims that it can't recognize one of the cartridges, so I have to open it up, and re-seat the cartridge.
Summary: This was a solid machine from the time I ordered it in March of 2010 up to now. The printer is now severely limited, as both the on-board ethernet and wi-fi adapters, basically, all network functions, ceased to operate. I would consider myself as an advanced network person, since I've worked in the field of IT for many years, so configuring a network is not an issue for me.
Summary: I am so sick of "Communication Errors" from my Mac's (both Lion and Snow Leopard) and having to restart the printer to get the wireless-n back. After restart, the printer works fine. Prints quickly with good color and text, but I would never buy for wireless use again. Everyone non-technical just connects the old USB HP and hates this Canon.
Summary: I've had this for exactly one year and I'm almost to the point of replacing it. I run a small business so I use it daily, but certainly in no way excessive. I probably print & copy no more than 100 pages a week. Even at that light load, this thing absolutely drinks ink. I can live with that but the much larger issue is that it is now experiencing multiple "communication errors" with my Mac daily.
Summary: Can't adjust the ink to a good color, everything is red. I keep on trying but no good and I paid to much for it not to work. but I through out the boxes so I can't returned it but I LOSS ON THIS PRODUCT.
Summary: Although it is an excellent all-in-one printer in most ways, it has one serious design flaw. Whenever it runs out of ink in one cartridge (it has five!), nothing on the machine will work. You cannot fax anything when one ink cartridge is out, even though faxing requires no ink! This design flaw is very annoying and unnecessary. I would not buy this machine for this reason. I am know running out to Staples to buy another ink cartridge so I can send an important fax.....
