Summary: The printer itself does an OK job printing photos. Obviously the quality and type of paper you use matters and for that alone, this printer is of passable quality. The ink is hard to find in stores around here (especially the grey) and doesn't last long. It's cheap enough per cartridge on Amazon, sure, but this thing goes through long cleaning periods between uses which wastes a substantial amount of ink. It's cheaper to go to Wal-Mart and have them print things for you.
Summary: Great print quality and speed, but the ink use is the worst I've seen. I'm not new to Canon or HP printers, and this needs a refill constantly on light use. I hesitate to print jobs at home, finding myself taking them to work to print. The cartridges are expensive, too ($12-15 a piece, and it requires 5 colors. So here I sit, needing to print forms to transfer my 403b account, but can't print because I'm out of gray, but I'm printing in black and white!
Summary: printing through wireless, sometimes it works and sometime it doesn't. very fickle. for example, you selected 50 pages of power points to be printed, but it prints only half way. overall, prints okay when it DOES print but very unreliable when it comes to wireless. Using the usb cable or LAN cable with it prints but not all the time.
Prevents you from ALL printing if only one cartridge runs out!

Summary: The MP990 may do other wonderous things but it consumes the ink ("consumables") like a voracious piggie. An MP990 owner, John Jardine from Kingston in Ontario Canada, said a little earlier this year: "Heads up that this printer requires grey ink, which is really hard to find. If you run out of any ink, you are locked out of all printer menus until you replace the ink, which is super frustrating. I love Canon, but the ink management of this printer makes me miserable.
Summary: I have had this printer for about 2 years now. I don't use it very often, maybe 2-3x every other month, and am SHOCKED that I have had to replace the black ink 4 times already. I like the quality, and it's easy to use, but man alive this thing burns through ink like crazy. I found some non-OEM ink cheap luckily because the canon cartridges are about $12 a piece and I really don't understand why this printer needs ~$50 worth of ink a year when I print maybe a dozen pages...
Summary: I bought this in the US and found it to work as advertised. Then I moved to Australia. It worked fine, except when I ran out of ink. Turns out, there is no place to get ink for the MP990, but the device is not very good at telling you that the ones that are sold for it do not work. I have spent over $200 trying to buy new ink. I tried 526 and it recognized each one of the tanks individually, but when I finished installing all of them, it produced errors again.
Summary: I've owned both HP and Lexmark printers over the last five years and this cannon definitely compares poorly on all fronts. Several times, the printer has locked up with an error message and a reboot did not immediately fix it. (although several reboots did) The paper tray feels so flimsy I don't like my late elementary school age children to load the paper. I'm afraid they'll break the tray off.
Summary: I updated to Lion and the wifi "feature" no longer works ("A communication error has occurred"). Even before Lion the wifi was spotty. Canon software truly stinks. It is clunky and is hardly intuitive. I am a Mac user. Canon is clearly a PC company. I would not recommend this product or any other Canon product to a Mac user.
Summary: Title kind of says it all, we have owned this printer for about half a year, my wife wanted to print photos and whatnot so she did some research and settled on the Canon Pixma MP990. The day we set it up it took forever to get the Wifi working, and ever since then it's picky and choosey when it wants to work, as I write this review I am troubleshooting the Wifi AGAIN because I desperately need to print a shipping label.
