Excerpt: I was looking for a quality photo printer in the $400 range. I found this photo printer and liked it when I first brought it home. It does require 7 ink tanks, which gets pretty expensive when you have to replace the ink. It seems like the color ink cartridges drain pretty quickly, so I bought another printer and just used this one for printing pictures.
Summary: The printer is great for text and printed images, very clean and crisp. Want a machine for great photos? Look elsewhere. Photos just don't look that great. In fact, I'm very disappointed. I'd read good reviews about photo printing. All I can say is, compared to what?! As is true for most printers these days, you will spend almost as much buying printer cartridges as buying another printer. This machine uses seven cartridges. Buy all seven and you'll pay almost $100.
Summary: I really had my heart set on getting a good scanner that would also do slides & negatives...I thought the price was out of whack...and the expensive, tedious ink cartridges are unnecessary...but I thought if it did a good job with negatives & slides, it's worth it...and...it didn't. It only scans one size...so all of those old negatives of different sizes you have...plan on taking them elsewhere for developing. The scanner & printer are OK if basic..

Summary: Genuinely gives a nice printout but the functionality of the included software is bizarrely deceptive. Intended commands somehow are either misconstrued or ignored. The flaw appears not due to defect but rather simply shoddily considered. One wonders how the hardware and the software people at Canon fail so miserably to communicate. Maddening if one chooses to print an unusual dimension. If you get the printer, find alternative software.
Summary: The Canon Pixma MP970 does have some of the best looking prints I have seen when you can get it to print. It has trouble feeding paper from time to time. You can put paper in the bottom and it will work better however it does also have trouble. Over all it is good.
Summary: Duplex printing switches into color mode regardless of whether you want it: black is approximated by spraying all colors on top of each other. It's slow and wastes ink. This is by design, supposedly to prevent smearing. I would have gone with a different printer had this been more clear.
Summary: The printer seems well built. It is much quieter than my old one. What little printing and scanning I have done seems excellent. Duplex printing works fine, but would be a little slow for large volumes. I have not tried slide scanning yet. Now for the bad part. When I received the printer, the setup was very straightforward and went well. I printed one page and it was great. For the next page, I got a paper jam.
