Fantastic Printer

Kreiling's &., Newegg
21 September 2010
  • Summary: In order to print Cd/DVD's you need to update the firmware and buy a CD tray from the net.
  • Pros: Outstanding service from Newegg (as usual). This printer does everything. Top feed, cassette feed, Prints CD/DVD's (after firmware update), duplex print. It's fast to scan and fast printing.
  • Cons: Ink cartriges are a little on the small side but I have a chip resetter and will be refilling so that doesn't matter much.

Multi-purpose PHOTO printer

Robert F., Newegg
19 September 2010
  • Summary: My Canon MP700 had a stroke, and the copier part stopped working. For the money, this was the best model for my needs. Huge improvement over the old MP700, BTW. This model was designed as a PHOTO printer. Hence the extra black ink tank.
  • Pros: 3 different interfaces: USB, wired network and wireless network. 5 ink tanks. There are TWO blacks, one for text and one for photos. Prints Duplex :) Setup is a breeze, although you do have to install the print head, and remove about a mile of tape before you can use the printer. You can scan ove...
  • Cons: Only one interface can be active at any one time. I was going to hook this up as my desktop USB printer and use the wireless connection for all of the laptops. Didn't happen. I wound up using the wired network connection. I set my router to reserve a specific IP address for the printer, and all t...

Great Printer, but too many models!

Andrew S., Newegg
7 September 2010
  • Summary: Too many Pixma models in Canon's lineup, and as a consumer, it frustrates me. Got to Canon's website, pick the all-in-one lineup (either home or office versions), and compare three models across the board. Mostly same features, same prices. Why offer a baffling array of me-too models, Canon???
  • Pros: The MP640 can print directly to CD/DVD! Less ink consumption than my legacy MP830 model. Image quality is amazing. Yay for wireless networking!
  • Cons: The MP640 does NOT have a fax feature, yet still gets to be called an "all-in-one". Come on, Canon. It has to cost less that 5 dollars to include/exclude faxing directly from these devices. Why take that legacy AIO feature away?? Way to make me install (shudder) a faxmodem in a modern PC. Also he...

copy feature disapointment

Timothy S., Newegg
15 August 2010
  • Summary: Seems like the other competition integrated a full touch screen opposed to the selection wheel, however this model provides lots of options and features, some may think the wheel approach leads to some complexity of use and navagating.
  • Pros: Ok for the price. Nice WiFi feature.
  • Cons: When in use as a copier, the actual right edge of the print out gets croped off, about 1/4 inch. There is no way to adjust this. This is not the condition for the photo feature. I've read this about other reviews for this printer, but thought they did something wrong.

PIXMA MP640 Tops!

Patricia B., Newegg
9 August 2010
  • Pros: For home office use it was easy as pie to set up and use. A little ticklish for scanning on an Apple becasue of the Apple scan software but the results were terrific and I couldn't have made a better choice!
  • Cons: Can't thinks of any!

error 5011

Anonymous, Newegg
27 July 2010
  • Pros: dpi, high scan resolution
  • Cons: DOA, Unit immediately made bad noises and displayed a 5011 error. After two hours on Canon tech line was told they had problems with this unit and ti return it to the seller or they could send a remanufactured unit. I asked if they had problems with all them he said a refund was my best avenue.

Superb Printer

Vincent H., Newegg
24 July 2010
  • Summary: After reading reviews from multiple sites, I bit the bullet and bought this to replace much hated (and often malfunctioning) Kodak ESP5. I did not try wireless printing, since that was not my primary goal, and from the experience over Canon MX860, I'm not sure if I want to try it unless necessary.
  • Pros: 1. General Printing is quick, quiet, and high quality. 2. Installation is pain-free. 3. Photo printing via photo paper is absolutely breath-taking. 4. Low noise, low vibration (Compared to HP AIOs and Kodak ESP 5).
  • Cons: 1. It requires larger-than-expected footprint (as stated by another reviewer), compounded by rear-tray taking extra space when needed to use photo paper (also pointed out by that reviewer). 2. Yes, it creates tiny poke patterns on photo paper (stated twice by another reviewer), BUT it is hardly r...

A terrific printer - use the right paper

James H., Newegg
10 July 2010
  • Summary: Note 1: The black ink cartridge (the biggest one), has run out quiet soon, in my opinion. This was the one supplied with the printer, so it's possible they do what HP does and supply a less-than-completely-topped-off starter cartridge. We'll see how the replacements last.
  • Pros: Had it 3 months now. Pro 1: Wireless printing is wonderful and reliable. Now the whole family can print whether or not my computer is on (my older printers had to be shared through my machine for others to print). Pro 2: Prints are gorgeous on HP, Canon, and Epson papers (top of the line photo gl...
  • Cons: There are two, not show-stoppers for me. Con 1: Paper drawer holds too few sheets of paper and needs constant refilling. Wish there was an add-on with larger capacity. Con 2: Be aware a larger footprint is needed than its measurements alone indicate. The photo paper feed in the back requires anot...

DON'T BUY THIS

onSale
28 May 2010
  • Summary: This printer is nothing but trouble . . . as each 'new, improved' Canon printer continues to be . . . and I've foolishly owned at least eight of them. Why? Because they only last til the warranty is up and each model is cheaper constructed, doesn't ...

Looks Good

Anonymous, Newegg
3 March 2010
  • Summary: I haven't tried the photo paper the other user specified (and had bought the printer before seeing the review), but I did print a few color stereograms on normal paper and they look good!
  • Pros: Easy setup Wireless Good print quality
  • Cons: None that I find
