Conclusion: 4-in-1 desktop laser unit top rated in 2015 CR Buying Guide.....New printer in sealed box came without any literature, software, or warranty paperwork. That said waiting on Big Box chain supplier to either replace this obviously used printer or supply needed info. That said...downloaded drivers from Canon website, unzipped, and launched drivers.
Summary: Very poor software. Scan quality is acceptable only for text. Scan time is somewhat slow. Print quality is OK. Copy quality is OK. Didn't try the fax function. I tried this device on my Windows 8.1 machine and Ubuntu 14.04 machine. The software utility looks like it was written in 1998. If the software and scan quality were better this would be a great low-price multifunction device.
Conclusion: - Great price for dual sided printing - Print quality is not acceptable even with other toner types - Menu features are weak - Have owned for a year but have to give it away and get something with decent print quality
Conclusion: I have spent almost five hours trying to get this printer running again but failed. The first time installation was good. Then we moved to another place and lost the CD. We can't download everything from the website, and couldn't get it connected to PC again. Very disappointed because my previous Canon was very reliable.
Excerpt: Not happy, not good for printing checks. It is hard to use and change format. The default auto duplex feature creates extra steps if you have most of your prints one sided only. We created a specific settings to fit our printing needs, but if you stop using that for a few minutes, the printer changed it back to the default, instead of staying on the last settings. So each time we want to print, we have to change the setting first.
Excerpt: Bought to replace an older Canon MF4350 which was used daily, mostly for scanning but also for copying and faxing. The older Canon was able to scan multiple pages to a single pdf file at the push of one button on the MFC4350. The new MF4890dw requires pressing a series of buttons on the MF4890df, then you need to use the mouse with the on screen MF Toolbox software to start the scan.
Summary: The Canon MF 4890 is disappointing. I have previously owned for about 6 years, the Canon MP 830 multifunction inkjet. I so infrequently use the inkjet, that the cartridges have significantly low life and despite printing almost nothing, I replace cartridges seemingly too frequently. These days, I scan a lot, I print very rarely and only print black and white, so a dry-ink option like this was the way to go.
Summary: This printer is OK for the money. It is loud when it prints, beeps fairly often when it comes in and out of power saving mode. Sheet feed seems OK. It prints fairly fast, Software and support are lousy. Good - Fast printing. Fairly light weight for it's volume with decent handles built into base for lifting. Holds about 200+ sheets of paper in cassette. Front panel tilts up for easier use when printer is on lower table.
