Very disappointed

bj, Canon
25 October 2014
  • Conclusion: I purchased the ImageClass MF4890dw a couple years ago. I had been happy to find a copier/scanner/printer to resolve my home office needs. I had several problems: my wireless password is long, and the Cannon kept forgetting it as I didn't leave it on 24/7. Re-entering the wireless password was painful, and annoying. Frequently even when entered correctly I had to fuss with my network to get the printer to be seen.

very poor scanning quality

Anonymous, Canon
5 October 2014
  • Conclusion: I bought MF4890dw to replace an older model (MF4450) and were horrified by the scanning quality. It was much worse than the older model. There is no control for the scanning function. This is huge backward regression for Canon. I do not want to buy another Canon MF printer any more.

Don't buy this printer

Reece, Canon
25 September 2014
  • Conclusion: Pros: * Compact size * Multifunction feature set (on paper, anyway) * Reasonable cost * Easy on-screen setup Cons: * Inscrutable instructions * clumsy Mac software * horrible Linux drivers (although I had a terrific customer service interaction out of that) * lack of scan to USB I would not buy this printer again, and I'd seriously scrutinize other Canon offerings. The lack of workable, stable Linux drivers is a particular shortcoming.

User Review

Vava, Canon
17 September 2014
  • Conclusion: The device simply doesn't work as a scanner. OK as a printer or copier but the wireless scanning setup is a pain and when it doesn't work the error message is simply "Error". Don't waste your money on this.

Worthless

Hobbes, Canon
16 August 2014
  • Conclusion: When the printer actually prints, it works flawlessly. The problem I have is that it constantly comes off line. As in ALL THE TIME. This printer is never ready to print for me. It is the only wireless device in my household (and I count no fewer than six such devices) that I have problems with. The controls are nonsensical and it might be the least-intuitive electronic device I have ever worked with.
  • Pros: High Quality Output, fast print speed
  • Cons: Difficult to use, Difficult Setup, unreliable

fax and scanner do not work properly

Anonymous, Canon
8 July 2014
  • Conclusion: Very disappointed on this product. IT is very difficult to set up to send/receive fax using the phone line. Scanning has an error message without error code: "An Error Occurred, Close?", totally don't know how to fix it.
  • Cons: Difficult to use, Difficult Setup, unreliable

Worst laser printer I ever owned

Bernie, Staples
14 June 2014
  • Excerpt: I have owned a couple of dozen lazer printers, including several Canons. This is my last Canon product ever. I have had the 4890 for three months and am very unhappyThe problem is the design. Two sided printing is the default and it is very hard to change. Why isn't two sided an option?

Worked great under Win XP and Win 8 / broken under Win 8.1

A. Kohen, Amazon
1 June 2014
  • Summary: Made the mistake of "upgrading" from Win 8 to Win 8.1. Had to delete drivers and reinstall from Canon website. TWICE! Extremely flaky. Have to reboot laptop/reset LAN on laptop and printer/ and pray that scanner or fax will work properly. Really unfortunate. Was a great device under XP and even 8. Not recommended for Win 8.1.

Poor Software and Torture to Set Up Wireless

PMDD, Amazon
18 February 2014
  • Summary: I have had the machine for 7 months now. It prints well and copying is easy. The software is very awkward and takes a long time to install. Scanning is tedious, as many others noted. The worst problem, for me is setting up the wireless. HP at least usually has a wizard which makes resetting the router fairly painless. Canon requires reading a manual to do the job for my setup., Every time the power goes out it requires reentering the router password.
