Summary: Over all, the printer is ok. It meets my office needs as a fax machine and as an occasional color printer. I like that I can have it send faxes to my computer for review so I don't waste paper on junk faxes. The scanning feature seems to work fine and I've used it to scan multiple documents but it does not scan at the higher resolutions because of not enough memory in the printer (an error report to that effect).
Summary: the Brother printer drivers for Linux do not properly handle tray selection. The 'autotray' setting in the menu on the printer is apparently useless, and the driver pulls from Tray 1 no matter what I do. As the drivers are key to a properly working printer, I docked two stars for that. Other than that, it's a great printer for general engineering drawing use.
Summary: I bought this printer during my time in college where I studied Graphic Design. I wanted a printer that could print and scan larger so I didn't always have to run out at the last second to a print shop. So far the printer is OK. I don't have the best paper so I'm not sure if that's why the colors aren't as saturated. I don't know about ink consumption either but so far it seems to be doing okay.
Great on features and format size, but poor results
2 November 2010
Summary: I purchased the Brother MFC6490 for it's 11x17 scanner and printer sizing for comic book/graphic novel illustration work. I love the size and features of the 6490 but the scanner simply could not reproduce my pencil lines as well as my older and less expensive Canon scanner. The 6490 scan was simply too bright and did not grab enough detail. The scanner simply would not pick up all of the pencil marks, even from lines from HB pencil lead.
Summary: Technical performance OK. Really enjoy the wireless. Got it because I needed an 11x17. Somehow (?) got it set up. But is it a pain in the XXX to use. There is a raised black lip on two sides of the scan bed, which crushes oversized drawings you're trying to scan. The info on that lip is, of course, black on black, way back under the lid, so impossible to see.
Summary: many features are missing. you cant block incoming fax number, you cant see the full fax on preview on your computer. you cant use your existing contacts to input for email or faxing, all other machines that I have had can go to your existing contacts and add without having to recreate another contact list. Setting up a cover sheet is not that easy or has generic ones availble. I can live with it but not totally happy.
Good for 11x17 printing; poor for color scans & duplex
8 August 2010
Summary: I love that this scanner/printer is 11x17, and very affordable, and has wifi. All that is great. However it's been a big problem for us, because: 1. We were intending to manually fake duplex by running pages through a second time, and 2. I need to scan color drawings on off-white paper. You cannot do manual duplex on this machine. It feeds multiple pages at once or it jams.
Summary: I had a really hard time getting it out of the box. It weighs 45 lbs. When I put it on my desk it took up the whole desk. This all-in-one is meant for business use, not for personal, home use. I returned it and got a Canon MX350. Much smaller footprint.
Summary: Did a lot of research and was really excited when I received the printer. Set up was as simple as it gets. Began to use the features, but after about 3 days, the printer burned up. Smelled like a bad ballast on an old flourescent light and the screen display went blank. I used it enough to fully appreciate the large flat screen for copying, and the automatic feed for copying/scanning.
