Excerpt: Bought this August. Set up went well. Three weeks later, it suddenly refused to print from my mobile devices. Any command to print from my laptop resulted in the printer going offline, putting the print request to memory, and then finally spitting it out 5 to 20 minutes later, with half a page blank (when a full page was expected). After restarting and resetting the wifi, everything was fine. Then, for no reason, the same problems re occurred.
Excerpt: The product turned out to be a big disapointment after all things seemed to go well. The Easy Tech associate spent almost three hours at my home trying to hook up all of the features but, after the fx, copy, and print modes were all up and running, the scan mode refused to work. This, no matter how much the associate tried. I wound up returning the item as well as the new usb cord I purchased for hard-wire ability.
Excerpt: It spits out the pages slower then the brother 825 that broke on me. It doesn't work well with Mac and takes several tries to print out attachments via the Preview on Mac. Have to restart the printer in order to get it to print mail and mail attachments . Will not buy another brother InkJet again. The 825 was wonderful but lasted less then a year with below average use.
Excerpt: This is the worst printer I have used in years. It keeps going offline no matter what I do. When I contact Brother for service they keep telling me it's not connected correctly. Nonsense. It prints sometimes and it scans all the time. So you can't tell me it's not connected correctly. A one page document sometimes comes out on 3 separate pages and it can take up to 10 minutes to come out. I have uninstalled and reinstalled a dozen times - literally. I'm over it.
Perpetually "Offline" and thus, won't print or scan after 5 mos. AVOID if you're an average electronics consumer!

Summary: I'm seldom compelled to write a review, but my frustration with this machine is at a high, so I want to prevent other consumers from making the same purchasing mistake as I have made months ago. I think it's a safe bet to say this machine has a planned obsolescence of 6 months, give or take 2 months. This model should be renamed to "Work Dumb MFC-J870DW".
Excerpt: The New Brother MFC-J870dw Inkjet All-in-One Printer by Brother, purchased last week, (needed badly for tax forms), prints only word and excel documents. Turbo tax forms or PDF files had to be saved on thumb drive and carried somewhere else to printThis is totally unacceptable. I bought this unit to save money on ink, but it does not function properly, even after loading the software twice. Now what do I do? Oh, I know, buy more printer ink for old reliable.
Summary: After many hours reviewing instructions and trying different solutions, including one hour on the phone with customer service (being told repeatedly to do the things that the manual had instructed and that I had already tried), I gave up getting it to recognize my wireless LAN and connected it by USB cable to the modem. In this configuration it works fine as a printer or copier, but still cannot scan an image to a file in any of the devices I have on the LAN.
Excerpt: Prior to this printer, I owned a Canon. I absolutely loved it and it's been the best printer I've owned to date. It served me quite faithfully for three years before it ultimately died. If it wasn't discontinued, I would've bought another.Relative to that printer, this Brother printer is garbage. I've never experienced a paper jam until now. It isn't even a once in awhile occurrence. If I have a long print job, there's going to be a paper jam - I guarantee it.
