Great home office A-I-O for modererate volume use, few and minor drawbacks
9 April 2012
Summary: Advantages: 1. Economical 2. Changing toner cartridges is a breeze. 3. All In One capability 4. Lots of options for scanning to file. Disadvantages: 1. Refuses to print shortly after toner low warning, but long before toner is empty. Override will allow continued printing until pages fade, but the procedure for override is not in the manual. Had to find it online. 2. Manual page feeder is single sheet only. 3. Manual page feeder is tempermental.
Summary: Other then the fact the price dropped $70 in less then 30 days after I got the unit I am very happy with it. B/W printing is fine for most everyone. Colour is good enough for business use. Scanning to PDF works great.
Pros: Cheap if you get it on sale. Software works well. Can refill toner to save money. Quality is good for this price range of an all in one colour laser. Fairly fast printing., Never had a single jam in over three months.
Cons: Auto feeder fails if you just throw a stack of paper in it and often pulls through two sheets as one. Works fine if you first tap the stack of paper on a table so it is all lined up. Guess I can't expect it to work like the $80,000 machine at work. Really not much of an issue., Unit is fairly large and heavy. Also to single feed special paper means you can only really do one page at a time as the little door to hold the paper is to short so you can't just put a stack ...
Summary: Have a HL-3040CN at home which shares the same guts, just no multifunction, and was very happy with it, so picked this up for the office. Color prints are great, scanner is good, fax is quick, prints are fast. Control center software is also very good, and works with all brother prints you may have on the network or locally connected. Toner refills are fairly cheap, and you can reset the toner counter via the front panel buttons. However, it is big.
Pros: Cheap for a color multifunction with fax, toner is easily refillable and not too expensive considering, network is a huge plus, software is pretty good, print quality is great, memory is user upgradable,
Cons: its BIG and heavy, OEM toner cartridges are expensive, too little built in RAM to print pictures, RAM required to upgrade is old PC-100 144 pin SODIMM modules.
Summary: If you've ever used a Brother printer, you know they're absolutely the best. This unit is no different. I bought it on sale, and it seems to be on sale frequently at NCIX, so wait for the sale if you want to buy it. Not only is the quality of everything this machine does amazing, but the speed is great too. If you're just looking for a printer, I'd recommend the Brother HL-3040CN. It's exactly the same as this just without the all in one functionality.
Summary: I had an HP2480 in the office for four years. It was slow to startup, noisy, large, and forced toner replacement when it had no degradation of prints. The Brother is a much nicer sized footprint. It starts up quickly and quietly with very nice print quality. I haven't had it long enough to see how the toner lasts, so only time will tell on consumables.
Summary: [...] I was dreading the setup because I wanted to connected it to my network via my router and use it with a Win XP Pro machine AND my new MacBook Pro laptop. I'm thinking "This is going to be a bear to set up!" Boy was I wrong! Let me recap my installation: Remove all packing from machine, insert toner drums, load paper, plug in ethernet, plug in machine, load Mac CD on MacBook and go through steps, do same on Windows PC and WALLA! Networked! I'm impressed!
Pros: Cross-Platform Compatible, Durable Construction, Easy Setup, Easy To Use, Fast Print Time, Sharp tones & colors
