Summary: THIS MACHINE WON'T WORK WITH VONAGE. BROTHER TOLD ME THIS, AND VONAGE TRIED TO WORK WITH ME, BUT IT IS HIT OR MISS WHEN YOU FAX SOMETHING TO SOMEONE. USUALLY YOU WILL GET THE "COMMUNICATION ERROR: 8001" WHEN YOU FAX. I SEEM TO BE RECEIVING FAXES FINE. BUT I BOUGHT IT STRICTLY FOR THE FAX AND COPIER. I HAVE TO SEND THINGS MULTIPLE TIMES FOR THE RECEIVER TO GET IT!
Summary: Amazingly this is a great copier/b-w printer for copying and printing. However, almost every envelope comes out wrinkled, even when we adjust the levers in the back as suggested in other reviews. We send out wrinkled envelopes to customers - yuk. Also I am not an expert in scanning but the quality seems truly lousy, so I only scan when necessary. Seems like a slow scanner too. So if you don't need envelopes or scanning much, a good option.
Summary: I bought a similar model to this one at Costco, model MFC-8670DW. As far as I can tell it has the exact same features and specs as the MFC-8870DW, but I only paid $349.99 ($399.99 with a $50 mfr rebate). I did a lot of research and read many reviews about Brother printers and other all-in-one laser printers and decided there was nothing on the market with the same speed and features as the Brother.
MFC 8480DN/8870DW Wrinkled Envelope Problem Solved
23 July 2009
Summary: I have a Brother MFC-8480DN which looks mechanically identical to the 8870DW. In order to print unwrinkled envelopes, the Brother's straight path feature must be activated. The envelope flows in a straight path out the back of the machine. Load three envelopes in the front, turn the machine around and open the large door on the back. On the right and left sides there are two blue levers. At the same time push both levers down to the "envelope" icons.
Summary: I purchased the unit intending to replace a lot of machinery in my office: printer, copier, scanner & fax machine. I work in graphics so scanning is crucial to my work. The device's scanning is on amateur -- to scan with a preview using the ADF you must feed the document twice -- it doesn't retain the preview in memory!
Summary: For the past 1 1/2 I have purchased several of these brother MFC machines, including the MFC 8870DW. As one other person indicated, the Brother printers seem to have a flaw with the paper tray and periodically they will stop working and click. A call to Brother does not resolve the problem.
Summary: The MFC is great with double sided printing and wireless capability, but there does not exist enough expletives to describe Brother's customer service. Thus: Printer = 5 stars, Customer Service = -10 stars. Setup was quick and easy and printed well. But mine had a problem making copies. Fax, Scan, Print all worked great, but just copies came out blurry, light, and with toner hue inconsistently across the page.
Summary: Best b/w multi-function printer money can buy. This is one of the few that has duplex capability for BOTH printing and scanning, and it is the only MF that has both capabilities and is anywhere close to this price range. The Brother MFC-8870DW would be a bargain at twice the price. We are especially happy with the wireless networking that has finally allowed us to locate the printer where we want it, rather than being constrained to being within cable range of our Mac.
