Summary: Have used it on a regular basis for 9 years and it has worked well. Occasionally the feeder for multiple pages doesn't work properly but that is the only negative thing that I can say about it.
Summary: Great machine. Have used it heavily at home for over four years. Large capacity ink makes it cheap to use. Had a fuser assembly go out in it. But it wasn't that hard to fix. The gear that is on the heated metal roller is made of plastic, and cracked with the heat. I had to fix it. I loved the copier, and had just replaced the rollers. Generic toners and rollers are available, and work great with this copier.
All In One Multi Purpose Multi Function Laser Printer

Summary: In addition to excellent laser print quality this unit is both a fully functional fax machine and a nice copier. You get all the necessary print fax and copy functions in one package. Highly recommended.
A workhorse of a printer/copier - poor for scanning
19 January 2011
Summary: I bought this refurbished from Amazon in 2006. It's been through several moves and is still going strong. We use the copier feature a lot, which works great, as the ADF can hold up to 50 pages. I did research on this printer and found reviews saying it was better/more reliable than newer models. I've had mixed results with the bypass paper port (where you stick one sheet of paper in), sometimes things get chewed by the printer, but not always.
Summary: The sheet feeder to scan multiple documents for scanning or copying does NOT work and never has. Everything about it is cumbersome to use. There is not and probably never will be a driver for Windows 7. The date on the driver I downloaded today is 3/20/2007, the one that came with it was 2006!! Which means the printer doesn't work all that well with VISTA either. You have to uninstall the old driver the install the "new" - old - driver.
Summary: MFC-8440 - Can't beat it for the price. After more than 43,000 prints the unit works the same as it did on Day 1. Over the entire period (4+ years now) it has jammed probably fewer than 10 times. The only item other than toner that has required replacement is the drum (standard consumable item). Scan speed is acceptable for home office use; it is not for high-volume business use, ie hundreds of pages a day.
Summary: What a great product! We use it for personal and business. Unsure how many prints, copies and scans we've put through it, but it is a lot! We've never so much as had a hiccup with this machine.
Summary: This is a great product since I do a lot of realestate constant faxing and receiving faxes is a must. Great price for my home office since i wouldn't want my other 10,000.00 all in one printer in my house, and just leave it at my office. performs almost as good as the one at my office. Wish I could PDF. with this probably its my comp not liking it. O well Great product Brother and thank you AMAZON!!!
Summary: I'm writing this "postmortem" review as a means of helping others who might find themselves in my situation. Reasonably priced laser AIO's are an elusive holy grail. The ones much under $300 can be flimsy and suitable for only lighter use. The over $300 category are more solid and versatile, but have fatal design flaws that can make you regret putting such a sum at risk for what can be an unsuitable return. The MFC 8440 falls into the latter category.
Brother scanners work best with Adobe Professional.
9 February 2008
Summary: I didn't realize this until my neighbor showed me: scanners are software controlled, not by the hardware buttons on the machine/printer. I have Brother MFC scanners which work flawlessly with Adobe Acrobat 6 Professional or Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional. (The advantage to 8 Professional is that it has Bates numbering capabilities.
