Summary: True story: Had a presentation at one of our customer's which required printing out several multi-page color document packets. I printed 75% of the packets from my computer (using the MFC-5890CN) and my coworker printed the remainder from his home (using a very cheap and portable HP color printer). Though I actually used better card stock the print quality difference between the pages I brought and his was staggering.
Summary: Got one from costco. Test page wouldn't print black, so called CS & was sent a new one (they needed a credit card to send you a second one, no charges have appeared as long as you send them the old one within 3 days of getting the new one). Anyway, the new one is working fine so far. Seems to be an OK printer, if you can deal with the hassle of possibly getting a printer with issues. Do like the print quality, cost for cartridges.
Summary: Owned 4 Brother Multifunction printers previously; very good reliability, print quality, economical ink cartridges, and ease of maintenance. This model doesn't live up to the reputation of previous models. Not wireless, manual is not user-friendly, the fax function is unnecessarily complicated and not TAD-friendly, print speed is slow, does not live up to advertised pages-per-minute in B/W or Color. However, the print quality is laser-perfect.
good hardware with nice features, pity about the software

Summary: We recently upgraded a lot of our printers in work, with these or variations on this model like the A3 scanner version. As all the installations were straight forward and i've found the hardware to be fairly flexible, when I had to upgrade my home printer I went for one of these. The initial installation seemed to go fine, I was aware from previous installations that the software that ships with the printer doesn't work properly with Microsoft Office 2010, for instance...
Summary: Be warned this printer is NOT COMPATABLE with Windows 7, you will have to go on the Brother web site to get the available upgrade. And then install it on your computer. After all Windows 7 has been out for at least a year. A big Black mark to Amazon for not letting potential customers know this, there is no mention at all on the order page.We had to find out from the Brother web site.
Summary: I bought this specifically to photocopy and scan. I have not set up the fax so cannot comment on this. Photocopying is quick and easy and produces good copies. I have printed from the computer which gives good results. I have not tried the A3 facility yet. Scanning is more problematic. When I use the touch button in the control centre, it starts scanning process but then freezes my Mac computer and I have had to switch it off at the mains in order to clear.
