Great multifunction printer- until it ran out of black ink

Summary: I bought this printer a while back to replace another Brother MFC model that had quit working after like 5 years. I liked the oversize scanning/printing ability and the wired network feature of the 5890. The LCD display panel was a nice touch. I bought it new and guess I've had it for maybe 2 years- I couldn't find a date of manufacture by the serial number. Recently, the black and color ink was low, so I used a compatible cartridge for all 4.
Summary: Every once in a while, it has to do a self cleaning which takes about 2 minutes. It really is annoying. Once it is ready to go, it does print fairly fast. I like the features of this printer except for the auto self cleaning. Which I could turn that feature off.
Summary: I've installed the print driver for this machine 3 times. At least it worked after the last two times. It always ends up doing the same thing. I try to scan and, no matter what interface I'm using (Photoshop, Brother's app, etc.) the pinwheel just goes for about a minute and the whole thing just quits. No message, no warning, nothing. Then, I have to reboot to get it to even recognize the machine again. So mad, you don't even know.
Summary: I bought this printer largely because of the good reviews and the 11x17 printing capability which comes in handy quite often. I was NOT impressed with the text quality; could not print out a resume that looked good enough, even on the best quality setting. On a side note, quality settings below "normal" are pretty low quality - too low for legible emails, etc. I'm not sure who would ever want to use them to save ink, as you'll be more frustrated with illegible prints.
Summary: I particularly wanted a multi functional printer that scanned A3 documents and the Brother MFC-5890CN seemed to fit the bill. Once received and unpacked it was obvious that the machine could only scan A4 documents. Totally useless to me. The way the description is worded is very misleading. It then cost me £26 to return it. The company that supplied the printer said they have no control over the wording of the advertisement as it is done by Amazon. Buyers beware!
Summary: I would not recommend the Brother MFC-5890cn. I study design and wanted an a3 printer and scanner that wouldn't cost a bomb - the cheap(ish) price isn't worth it. It was fairly difficult to set up and does not come with a USB connector to your computer. The print quality is awful! It doesn't print any sort of bright colour well so colours appear muted and the quality or purples and greens is especially bad. my £30 printer does a better job.
Summary: Der Drucker wurde in kürzester Zeit geliefert.
