Summary: The product is excellant for the price. I have installed or setup several of these devices and the only problem is in the software installation the paper port portion hangs up or takes an extreme amount of time to complete.
Summary: My MFC-5440CN printer burned out because I left it on all the time. This model has a sleep mode to prevent that. I leave it plugged as a FAX to my land line to discourage all of those annoying solicitors. It was listed as refurbished but looks and performs like brand new. To avoid problems in the future, I also bought the Square Trade buyer protection plan for 3 years. Haven't tried printing photos yet, but the dual paper trays are a big bonus.
Summary: For a Mac user, this is a fine mulit-function machine. The software drivers for the printer's less-used preferences are a little off, but the fax is fast, the scanner communicates with every application to which I've linked it, the printer is as good as any I've seen for the money (or more). My only complaint is the orientation of the paper delivery, and the fact that after a few copies or faxes start to pile up, the floor's where they finally rest.
Summary: After trying three different Multifunction machines, (2 HP's and 1 Epson) and returning them, I've finally found one that does what it is supposed to do. I currently have a Compaq laptop and Powerbook G4. This printer was a breeze to set up on both. The scanning feature is wonderful. All of my scans have come out true to the original. The fax works great, never had any trouble sending or receiving.
Ink replacement too fast and no print when one cartridge is empty
A. D'Ambrosio "AJ D'AMBROSIO", Amazon
1 October 2005
Summary: The only complaint that I have on this model is that whether or not you use the color ink or not it empties fast and then the printer won't work until you replace one color that may be out. I only use black and white right now, I've used no color copies or faxes or scans at all. The color cartridges still emptied out fast and the printer stops printing.
Summary: I bought this to replace an HP OfficeJet G85 with DirectJet printserver, which never had good drivers for Mac OS X or Windows XP. The Brother 5840 is as slow as the reviews say and slower than I expected, but the print quality is roughly as good as the officejet's. The big advantage over the officejet, however, is that the Brother just works. The Windows XP drivers worked out of the box (for SP2).
