Summary: Sure, when you first open it up and use it it feels like the best thing in the world, but this machine and perhaps all Brother MFCs have secret flaws that unveil overtime. First of all, it will not print B/W if you don't have ALL the color ink install (maybe all printers behave like this, I don't know but its unfair to the user).
Summary: I would strongly recommend that the buyer truely beware of refurbished products. The company that refurbishes them "Doesn't" test them thoroughly. Copy/Scan/photo works great but the fax is locked up. That was my main purpose of purchasing this device so I don't have to go out and fax. I'm stuck with a real piece now until I can budget for something that works.
Summary: Don't waste your precious time and money on any brother products. I did - learn from my mistake. Purchased a Borther MFC from staples. In 13 months, the printerhead malfunctioned. Called Brother to see course of action - said nothing I can do. Further research revealled that Brother new of defective printer heads but hid it from public.
Summary: I bought this printer back in February 2005 and it has been the biggest ink hog ever. I buy a lot of printers for my business, but I really needed an all in one that had a good automatic scanner and would print photos from my memory card. Out of the box, it is a super thrill - it works great, it looks good, it prints great pictures and it scans fast and trouble free. The biggest down side to this printer is the way it senses the ink levels in the cartridges.
Brother MFC 5840CN: Multi-Function Printer With Multi-Problems!
3 January 2008
Summary: After owning this the Brother MFC 5840CN inkjet all-in-one printer for over 2 years, I have decided now is the time to upgrade to another model. Whilst this printer coped well as not only my printer, but my photo-copier and scanner aswell, it was plagued with problems from day one. I ordered this all-in-one printer from a home shopping channel after being tempted by the promise of an item that was going to revolutionise my life!
Pros: Good quailty printing. No need for PC. Good range of features.
Cons: Very large. Very noisy. Occasional use causes problems.
