Summary: Tried setting this up with Linux. Took hours of searching docs and webpages and got no help from the company even though they have Linux drivers and the manual describes (with inaccurate information) how to use the printer with Linux. After that, I figured it would be a pleasant relief to plug it into Windows and have it work. But that WAS EVEN WORSE. After months of configuring, downloading reinstalling, it still doesn't work right under windows.

Summary: Don't waste your precious time and money on any brother products. I did - learn from my mistake. Purchased a Borther MFC from staples. In 13 months, the printerhead malfunctioned. Called Brother to see course of action - said nothing I can do. Further research revealled that Brother new of defective printer heads but hid it from public.
Summary: Like others here, I bought the Brother MFC-5840CN because I have Macs and Windows PCs and a network for the whole bunch. I like that the printer installed fine for Mac OS 8.6, OS X 10.3, Windows 98SE, and Windows 2000. I plan to set the big tray as primary and the number one tray to "glossy" so I can have photo paper at the ready. Scanning to the PCs and Macs works great, too. I haven't messed with the fax yet. The multiple tray thing didn't work the way I expected.
