EXCELLENT PRODUCT AND IT IS WORTH EVERY SINGLE PENNY I SPENT ON IT.
9 July 2012
Summary: I BOUGHT THIS PRODUCT BECAUSE I NEEDED A PRINTER THAT IS FAST AND CAN PRINT CLEARLY IN BOTH BLACK AND COLOR.UNLIKE MY DELL 5100,IT IS LIGHT WEIGHT AND THIS IS MY MAIN REASON FOR FALLING IN LOVE WITH IT.I CAN NOT THINK OF ANY REASON TO DISLIKE THIS PRODUCT.HOWEVER, AT THIS VERY EARLY TIME,THE PRODUCT IS PERFORMING EXCELLENTLY BUT TIME WILL TELL.I WILL RECOMMENT IT TO ANYONE
Summary: I won't be buying another Brother printer if this is the standard. First, the network cable doesn't attach to the exterior like one would expect. Instead you have to snake the cable through a tight channel carved out below the scan deck. Why? The software is horrible. Scanning multiple documents opens separate MS Paint windows with bitmap documents of the scan. If this were 1995 that would be great but is pretty weak compared to other brands.
Under 300 pages, firmware corrupt, won't print color
M. Fields, Amazon
27 January 2012
Summary: After less than 300 pages of printing, this printer suddenly has decided even with full ink levels, that it won't print color, and the network configuration page gives me an error 404. I tried downloading the firmware update tool from brother, but because its not a newer firmware than what is on the printer it refuses to update it.
Best All Around Construction/Mobile Office Machine
4 November 2011
Summary: I pack this thing to jobsite trailers everywhere I have to set up office for a short while or a desk jockey for the longer stays. its an all in one that does everything it should well. My ink cost lowered from $90 a month to $15 every 3!! months with MFC-5490CN, if you dont take your time to load faxes and scans itll get sideways but other than that I have no problems! Great product for low cost, this one was 130 something after shipping.
Summary: We bought this machine for our store because it was the only one that fit into our cabinet. What a mistake. Firstly, when one of the ink cartridges is empty, the whole thing stops working. So if you are out of Cyan or Magenta ink, you won't be able to print anything, not even in black ink, even if the black ink cartridge is perfectly full! It's also very glitchy.
Summary: I buy these for work because of space limitation, they last about a year when printing 5-20 pages a day. They will not work if you are out of any type of ink, even if you only want to print in black & white and yellow is out. Taking out paper jams can be a pain if they are deep in, as there is no easy access unless you have the hands of a 5 year old.
Summary: Decent printer. Paid $70 w/ rebate for a refurb model at Staples. Would not find it worth $125, even as a new printer. GOOD: Nice printing; all-in-one features all work I like the scanning software although aannoying to set up (poor instructions...or I just don't read 'em carefully) Previous experience with Brother service mostly good BAD: Paper tray waaay cheap No ability to feed a single sheet directly--not a huge problem but...
Summary: This brand new MFC-5490CN was defective. After calling Brother tech support. They confirmed that it was defective. The only solutions offered by Brother was to pay them a deposit of $50 for a replacement with a refurbished machine or taking it to a service center that's an hours drive away. I think if you buy a brand new machine, they should replace it with a brand new machine -- Period. I had a Brother MFC-3220c that we were replacing.
