Cheap but the inks are not

  • Excerpt: I bought this printer in 2006 & I noticed that it's an ink guzzler especially when you do a lot of printing.  When you buy a generic type of ink replacements, they seem to last longer, but when you buy the brother trademark type of inks, they don't last long.  Now this printer is acting up on me, the magenta ink won't print at all & I kept cleaning the heads & it just quit totally.

Good value

  • Excerpt: I am reviewing the Brother MFC-5440 CN.  It is a very functional printer with lots of features.  I especially liked the paper feeder on top, it makes copying a breeze.  And I needed lots of copies.  The fax machine is very user friendly.  I had never used a fax before and was faxing in minutes. I do recommend only using brother cartridges I ordered my replacements off ebay and after about a year it quit printing in blue and there was nothing I could do to fix it.

Good hardware, poor firmware and customer support

torchddv, epinions.com
2 November 2006
  • Summary: Good all-round machine if you know it's quirks and have a bit of tech-savvy. Could be frustrating for some.
  • Pros: Good all-round machine. Excels at nothing, but acceptable at everything.
  • Cons: Customer service is an oxymoron at Brother. The firmware was apparently written by Microsoft.

good printer just watch the carts

thomgeo1, Amazon
25 December 2005
  • Summary: I purchased this printer about 6 months ago. Overall it is a decent printer. The black and white and color prints are good quality. The copier and fax work well, no problems. The sheet feeders is OK but what do you expect at this price. However one thing really ticks me off and is the requirement of the printer that you can not have any empty color carts. If any of the color carts are empty then you can not print at all even if it is only black and white.

"Great for low-volume users"

CNET
9 January 2005
  • Pros: Has fax-from-PC, OCR software included. Separate ink carts a bonus at this price point.
  • Cons: Took two tries to install software so it didn't freeze on scans. Slow scanner. Photoprinting a little worse than HP 930C. OCR software not too strong. Printing and copying slower than HP 5510.
