Be forewarned about the cartridges!

roadbikegirl15, Amazon
6 June 2007
  • Summary: This would probably be adequate for very low-volume usage. The paper tray doesn't hold very much at a time. The construction is a little flimsy. The machine itself has performed well, but BEWARE... if you have any kind of significant volume, you will pay through the nose on the cartridges because you have to replace the color cartridges whether you use them or not. We are a high-volume department which receives faxes throughout the day.

Shuts down most functions if any ink cartrige runs low

Kindle Customer, Amazon
6 June 2007
  • Summary: This printer wastes ink and shuts down when ink runs low. You can't even send a fax if you run out of one of the inks. Also, mine shows that the ink is empty when there is actually ink left. I recommend a printer from a vendor that is working to help you and your business, noe one that *seems* to be focused on getting you to buy un-needed ink.

Useless for envelopes

T. Knight, Amazon
21 January 2007
  • Summary: Scans fine, prints ok. Haven't really noticed the obsessive self cleaning or abnormally high ink usage but I HAVE only successfully printed about 20% of the envelopes I have tried to print (about 20 out of 100!!) -- I even went for the more expensive "for inkjet use" envelopes thinking it was the cheap ones I was using that was jamming it.

Decent functionality, atrocious ink use

Jay Bromley, Amazon
24 December 2006
  • Summary: While this printer functions satisfactorily and the network printing feature is nice, it's ink use makes it an unacceptable long-term solution. As far as functionality goes, all of this machine's functionality is satisfactory and solid, though a bit slow. Getting it set up was straightforward and at first, I thought this printer was great. There were no stellar performances for any functionality and the build quality is not great, but for the price I was quite satisfied.

Good but not great

Overstock
27 September 2006
  • Summary: While the quality of the printing with this device is good (not great), I am dissappointed in the speed at which it prints. It takes approx. 4 - 5 minutes to print 24 pages in black and white, which is not what I expected based off the features advertised. If you are not concerned with the speed of printing, then this is a good printer for the money, otherwise I would not recommend it.

Standard BROTHER Glitches

so_chem_and_equip, Ebay
2 September 2006
  • Summary: This is no different than any other Brother unit I have owned. The print quality is good if You can actually get the paper to feed correctly! This unit, as well as every other Brother unit I have used has major paper feed/paper jam issues. If you are a high volume user as I am, stay away from Brother altogether. Also, it has a very high ink consumption rate and you can ONLY use OEM Brother Ink and Cartridges. Any other ink or cartridge will damage the printheads.

Kurzbewertung zu Brother MFC 5440CN

Timo Schuering, Dooyoo
19 March 2008
