The Brother MFC-465 is decent but the software is awful

Excerpt: The Brother MFC-465CN is a mid-tier mutlifunction scan / print / copy machine controlled by truly terrible software. The features themselves function as advertised and I have not had any physical issues with the machine. The software, however, has caused all sorts of problems on my computer, particularly around causing conflicts with internet connectivity.
The Brother MFC 465CN is a good all in one printer

Excerpt: The Brother MFC 465CN all in one printer is a good everyday printer and fax machine. I gave it 3 stars because it is slow when printing pictures, and scanning is complicated. Brother should have put a prescan feature in the scanning program to make it easier to scan smaller items. I need to do this to scan stamps for sale on ebay, and it is much to complicated to do so. It is a very affordable all in one printer though, and will certainly be good for the average user.
Summary: The printer functions are easy to understand and work perfectly. I use mine for a fax machine as well as a multitude of other printing functions, all work flawlessly. My only complaint is the excessive use of ink. I'm not talking about actually printing because the level of ink is adjustable in your printer parameters. I'm talking about when the printer is set to use only black which is what I keep mine set on, the color is still used up.
Summary: i use primarily black ink. even so, it will tell me to replace the colored ink even when it's not full. This printer does will at making you shell out more money for ink cartridges. however, if you don't usually print color, might as well get a toner for a laserjet. besdies that, it prints great photos when using the right paper. scan quality is good, but just very slow.
I figured out how to trick the empty color ink issue!

Summary: I read it somewhere else, and after much trial and error I got it to work: In Windows Printer properties, set your printer settings to maximize ink: Bi-Directional printing:NO, Print quality: FAST, Paper: PLAIN Place a very small piece of black electric tape over the small fluid gauge glass on the front edge of the ink cartridge. I had to try a few times to get the piece the right size.. it should cover the 3-sided glass on all three sides, from top to bottom.
Empty color ink halts all productivity - even black & white prints

Summary: There are two fundamentally irritating things about this device. Number one, printing over the network requires the printer to be powered on. This means that if you are in another room, you have to first get up and walk over to the printer and turn it on, then walk back to the PC to print your documents, and finally return to the printer again and scoop up your stuff. This really stinks if the printer is located on another floor of the house.
Summary: Nice functionality. Great networking. But the network scanner functions are a little lacking. Doesn't work at all on my Macs, and the ability to initiate a scan from the unit does not work on the PC. I can only initiate the scan from the PC.
Summary: I have enjoyed the MFC so far -- good quality, compact. However, when one print cartridge runs out of ink, you CAN NOT print anything at all. So when I used up the blue ink on printing photos, I could not even print a simple black and white document until I replaced the blue cartridge.
Summary: The price of this all in one is good. For what it cost, you do get the features of more expensive all in ones. One of the features you don't get is speed. Printing is slow as people have said but what is really slow, to the point of being frustrating, is scan saved to computer. Even a low resoltion if 150 DPI takes some time. Had a Canon all in one, where the transfer speed was very quick even when using a higher DPI resoltion.
