Summary: I purchased my Brother MFC 3420c 3 years ago. First let me say that I'm not a heavy user I run about 5000 pages through the machine per year and for the first year or 2 ; I was pleased with its ease of setup and its functions. Initially I had very few problems not with standing the occasional pager jam. .
Summary: This printer uses more ink cleaning itself... at all hours of day and night ... than I use printing documents. If one cartridge goes empty, the machine shuts down and won't do ANYTHING! Won't even SCAN! Had an error code xxxx??? that required a factory phone call. Ended up driving forty miles each way to a hole-in-the-wall "dealer" who had stacks of them in his "showroom" waiting for new print-heads. Had to go back in a week to pick it up. Right.... 40 miles each way.
Summary: paper jams every min, error 41 everytime, must be unplugged, eats lots of ink, i print about 50 pages and need new expensive ink. It's not worth a penny/ Had it replaced 2 times and serviced twice, but still garbage.
Summary: Brother has a serious defect in their print heads. Bought this printer, fed it a lot of ink (for not very much printing - not sure where its going). After barely 3 years, get Error 41 - which means the print head is dieing. Google the problem - its happening all over. Print quality, particularly copy quality was great.
I like the printer it has all the functions that I need

Summary: It is easy to use, I would like for it too of had a picture bridge on it instead one would have to use a computer to print pictures from a digital camera. I needed a printer with a fax on it and the price was super so I couldn,t resist buying it. It is a great product. Bar none.
Summary: I own(ed) this printer, and have had problems from the beginning. I wish that I had taken it back right after I brought it home. The paper jams regularly. It sucks up ink, which is very very expensive to replace. It beeps around giving me commands to open and close the cover for no apparent reason. Most recently, it gave me the fatal error 41. Other than the fact that I just replenished it's ink supply, I am more than happy to replace it. My advice...don't buy Brother.
Summary: Dont buy this printer, thats the bottom line. You will spend a huge amount of money on Ink even though you dont use the thing and futher more there is "Machine Error 41", just google that phrase to see how many people have the same problem. STAY WELL AWAY!
Summary: I purchased a refurbished unit several months ago for $69 and am generally happy with the unit. I had been using a Hewlett Packard 5505, another 4 in one machine, and was not happy with it because both the scanner and the printer were too slow and because of how expensive the ink cartridges are. I would not be willing to pay full price for the Brother.
Summary: I actually was enjoying this printer when I first got it, as it did everything that I needed just fine, but then I began to notice things. This thing would test the print head at all kinds of time, which caused the machine to use the ink. After going through a number of ink carts., I asked a guy in an ink store about using refill kits. He said that the brother ink carts become very unreliable with them.
Summary: This unit prints with ok quality, has a decent scanner, and of course, can send and receive faxes. However, it will consume ink at a rate that will make you replace it almost monthly (even if you don't use it), and hold you hostage until you do. This is all do to a cleaning process that uses more ink than printing. The worst part is, even if a color, say blue, is out. You cannot print in any color, not even black, until the color is replaced.
