good mobo, but read cpu's supported before purchasing

Orly A. Pereyra, Amazon
1 February 2010
  • Summary: Can't say that this is not a really good mobo for the price, it has a lot of features, the x-fi sound card is really good, the only problem I had with it is that for some reason it didn't support my Intel E7400 Core2Duo processor, looking at MSI site it indicated that the processor was supported...

Updated review

earl c., Newegg
19 January 2009
  • Summary: The sound card and software were very and since I didn't buy it for it for that it was a nice suprise. The sli layout is nice as well. Using this for my son with a Q6700 and 8800Gt and he enjoys it for the game she plays. I play crysis and for that the upgrade path is either a phenom II or I7.
  • Pros: Well I thought all the issues were resolved until I swapped to an E8500 for testing with a GTX 260 and OCZ reaper 8500. The video distortion in crysis warhead was unresolvable and went away immediately after putting a Q6700 cpu into it. I do not recommend this for anything over 3 ghz. So for some...
  • Cons: Video distortion and too many flashes needed to load Vista for the average person. The BSOD issues were with nvgts.sys and memory timing which is easy to fix. The FSB going to 1333 should not exceed 3ghz you have been warned.

Very pleased with this board

Anonymous, Newegg
1 October 2008
  • Summary: Tons of voltage options which can be good and bad. Alot of people have problems overclocking these boards but with patience you can easily overclock this to extreme levels. I am running a mild FSB overclock of 375 with memory at 1:1 and it is 100% stable even with a 550W PSU and SLI.
  • Pros: I've built many rigs and this was my first enthusiast class motherboard. I needed SLI to go with my two 8800GTS SSCs and E8500 and this looked like a good choice. The machine has been rock solid and games are really fast compared to my older single card rig.
  • Cons: Price. Somewhat confusing BIOS but I hear that the newer BIOS versions are better and easier.

Nice Board

Brett M., Newegg
26 September 2008
  • Summary: If it doesnt post, or gets stuck at memory screen, it might be a problem with the bios.
  • Pros: Nice board when you get it to work, well planned.
  • Cons: Bios sucks, I RMA'd first board. Turns out the bios version 1 does not work well with E8400 intel chip. Had to install older chip to flash bios, then worked fine. Puts out alot of heat.

Not quite ready

Ben G., Newegg
18 September 2008
  • Summary: An attractive board that is sturdy, and other than for big graphics cards, well planned.
  • Pros: Lots of connectivity and good features.
  • Cons: Not ready for SLI use for newest GPUs (my nVidia 260 is too long to place more than one in). There are necessary MB jumper connections in the way of placing a 10" long card other than in one slot.

Easy Overclocking

Dallas2000 "Dallas", Amazon
15 September 2008
  • Summary: Pros: If you want to just overclock a little this board will allow it with some very simple bios settings. However, if you want to go completely OC crazy it will allow that, too. Adding 8Gb RAM and making some minor bios setting changes it is running perfectly even with a 3% OC.

Okay board

Anonymous, Newegg
22 August 2008
  • Summary: Don't let the cons drive you away. It's still a great, rock solid board, and if you can with not being able to overclock and having the stupid 4th PCI-E slot, then I highly recommend it. Those are really the only 2 cons, dont let them discourage you unless you REALLY care about them
  • Pros: The cooling system is much better than any other 780i board on the market. The NB stays nice and cool. It's a very clean, and neat board with a good Raid system and good back connectors. I also really like the solid state capacitors. It's the only 780i board that has solid caps, other than the as...
  • Cons: Very poor bios for Overclocking. It's a very difficult thing to do on this board, and most the time wont work. I've overclocked fine on other boards, but this one just has a horrible lack of options in the Bios that stops me from doing that. Even with the newest bios revision, this is not fixed. ...

Very Good Product - Terrible MSI Tech Support

Blake L., Newegg
5 August 2008
  • Pros: Awesome Motherboard, Great for Overclocking, Great board overall. Very Impressed
  • Cons: ok, so i bought this board and it worked great but after 31 days (1 day after newegg's RMA ends) (not newegg's fault) the board dies on me. So i contact MSI's customer service and they tell me to fill out an RMA form and send it in, so i did. Shipped the board to them and they say it will take ab...

Bad overclock...

Coleson R., Newegg
24 July 2008
  • Pros: Comes with a soundcard. Has lots of slots, holds all three of my GTX260's perfectly.
  • Cons: If you want to overclock you PC, do not get this board... The bios is very difficult to understand. "Auto" means "Default" if you're curious.

Great Motherboard

Anonymous, Newegg
21 July 2008
  • Summary: The first one I got was defective so I had to RMA once before I got a working one.
  • Pros: The motherboard is very well designed and provides fast performance. Great motherboard for any SLI setup.
  • Cons: It can take a while to find stable settings but once you do it runs great, no problems. I didn't like where the SATA ports were placed, it's kind of at an awkward spot and can be difficult to attach more once you get your video card(s) connected. I'm running two 9800gtx's and I had to make sure I...
