MSI K9A2 Platinum

  • Excerpt: If you want AMD performance without the cost, MSI’s K9A2 Platinum might be the ticket. It’s a bare-bones yet performance-oriented board for Phenom procs. Based on the AMD 790FX chipset, the MSI K9A2 Platinum sports four x16 physical PCI-E 2.0 slots. While most boards today sport six expansion slots, MSI goes the max with seven slots. Four are full-length PCI-E slots, two are PCI and the seventh is a dinky x1 PCI-E. You pay a price for it though.
  • Pros: SAS support and super-low pricing.
  • Cons: Poor SATA port placement; fallback DOS update method is horrible.

  • Summary: Believe it or not, I have to say there are a lot of positives and strong points about the MSI K9A2 Platinum. It's a very solid motherboard that offers a lot of features that will attract both AMD fans and moderate gamers alike. It may not be the choice of the enthusiast, but it certainly has a lot to offer. Take for example, the ability to support Crossfire X configuration via the 4 PCIe slots, as well as being able to use widely available DDR2 ram.
  • Pros: - Supports AMD Phenom quad core processors, - Supports DDR2 ram, - Possible 4-way Crossfire X Confguration, - Spider Platform is very affordable
  • Cons: - Some performance issues with current Phenom CPUs

MSI K9A2 Platinum AMD 790FX Motherboard

HotHardware
31 January 2008
  • Conclusion: Our benchmark results were somewhat of a see-saw battle between the nForce 590 SLI and AMD 790FX chipsets.  With respect to the PCMark Vantage test suite, the Gigabyte motherboard we tested won all but the Productivity test.  When we shifted our attention to more real-world tests, however, the K9A2 Platinum topped the Gigabyte GA-M590SLI-S5 in each test, but not by the same type of margins we recorded with PCMark Vantage.
  • Pros: Good Feature set, Solid Overclocking, Complete BIOS, Competitive Performance, Four Graphics Slots, Good Retail Bundle
  • Cons: Chipset Heatpipe May Hit Graphics Card, BIOS Requires Hard Reset with failed Overclock
