Good Hyper-V server board

Robert J., Newegg
7 October 2008
  • Summary: We are using the Intel S5000PSLSAS boards in the servers that need two PCIe x8 cards or were we had to put two full-length PCIe x4 cards in. We use this board in our Hyper-V servers (Dual Harpertown E5430's, 32GB DDR2 FB-DIMMs, WD 300GB Velociraptors in RAID0) and it performs flawlessly.
  • Pros: 32GB DDR2 FBDIMM, SATA RAID and Dual quad core support. Having a PCIe x16 slot allowed us to use a high-end video card in the system as well. The Intel Deployment CD that comes with the motherboard makes updating the BIOS a breeze.
  • Cons: Have to update the BIOS to use it with the Harpertown 5400-series processors and you can't update the BIOS with a Harpertown in it. Luckily we had a Xeon 5150 that we were able to borrow from another server to use to update the BIOS. Only one PCIe x16 slot, no x8 slots. The CPU power plug locatio...

Great workstation board

Anonymous, Newegg
21 July 2007
  • Summary: I bought this to build a home server. I run as many as 16 virtual PCs and servers at a time using VMWare Virtual Server on Vista Ultimate X64 and this thing doesn't even break a sweat. I got a pretty quiet case and pretty quiet fans but the CPU fans are loud.
  • Pros: Dual quad-core Xeon support. 16-bit PCI-E. 8 FB-DDR2 slots.
  • Cons: Newegg has been out of stock for a long time so I had to pay a lot more from another seller named for some tropical jungle. Not sure if it is the fault of the board or of the aftermarket Xeon CPU coolers I bought but the capacitors around the CPU sockets prevented me from using the coolers. But s...

  • Summary: as with any hardware...check it all out before you install it...that can save you and Newegg from headaches down the road.
  • Pros: This board is uber fast...I have ran 27 separate processes at the same time and my cpu usage was 7%.it also has pci-e slots for the new and faster vid cards..ad as always Newegg's RMA dept rocks...my first board had a flaw in it and Newegg had me a new one in 5 days...5 days including my shipping...

Woodcrest works, and Video too

Samuel L., Newegg
15 January 2007
  • Summary: To the one who Intel told you there was nothing to do, I'm sorry they bungled up with you. You probably just had a bad board. I've built 3 machines with this board, and all have worked without a problem, all using various models of the Woodcrest (Xeon 5150, 5140, and 5120 were the ones I used).
  • Pros: 1. Works with Dual-core Xeon 5000 series processors and is also the Quad-core procs. 2. PCI-e 16x slot for super-game machine making. 3. Quad-channel memory bus, plus each memory slot is accessed in a "serial" manner.
  • Cons: 1. Uses FB-DIMMs, which are costly, but you get great performance at least. 2. Serial access to the memory is done thru conversion, so you get a bit of speed-loss from it. If you run with dual-channel config, the memory performance is actually slower than on a dual-channel Core 2 Duo board (compa...

love it!

Robert T., Newegg
25 December 2006
  • Summary: Runs my 5160 xeons with zero problems. Installing xeons is always a bit of a puzzle, so be careful!
  • Pros: Super fast! Love this motherboard. Comes with a Intel Boot cd which boots into linux and grabs the latest bios upgrades and then prepares your HD for OS install. Unfortunately, I'm stuck using primarily XP32 with my new xeon system, due to closed binary only applications that don't support non-wi...
  • Cons: Only 1 PATA connector, which wouldn't work with my old plextor 40x burner. The burner works perfectly on my older xeon system, so not sure what the problem is.

Horrible

Tom B., Newegg
20 December 2006
  • Pros: None
  • Cons: This board does not work with the woodcrest chip, after working with intel support for a couple of days they finally agreed that there is nothing that can be done.

20 September 2008
  • Summary: Discrepo respecto a la anterior opinión en varios aspectos: - Esta placa base está pensada fundamentalmente para CAD, 3D, etc y no para juegos. Este tipo de placas suelen ser torpes con video juegos, pero eficaces en render.
