Excellent, but touchy.

Anonymous, Newegg
18 August 2011
  • Summary: Haven't had the chance yet to test out the iKVM feature. For those of you who want system specs. Here they are. I know it's nothing special. Antec 300 black case Z8NA-D6 Motherboard Intel E5645 CPU GSkill 1333 CL9 Memory 3x4GB DIMMS ASUS 460GT 768MB video card SoundBlaster AudigySE sound Card (PCI)...
  • Pros: I am currently using this board with only one E5645 CPU. I plan to get the second processor soon. Although there are some minor compatibility issues with this board, it will run very stable after it is setup right. This board is a good alternative to the EVGA SR-2 if you are on a budget like me. ...
  • Cons: Like some other reviews I've read, I had an issue with the memory. It told me a DIMM was bad, but all I had to do was rearrange the order of the memory DIMMS. After that, it recognized all 12GB of GSkill 1333 non-registered, non-ECC memory. One thing that confuses me is that I also had a problem ...

  • Summary: Running ESXi 4.1 U1 (usb boot) on this board with a Xeon E5620, 20gb Kingston Reg/ECC memory and Adaptec 5405 raid card with 4x WD RE4 drives. Everything runs great and without an issue.
  • Pros: ATX form factor with dual sockets! Great features and zero issues so far.

pretty good

John C., Newegg
3 February 2011
  • Pros: This board shipped with the 1002 bios which supports the E5640 Xeon processor. Other reviews have noted that it did not run out of box but mine did. The system detects all 48GB of ram, though it runs in 1066 instead of 1333, I think this is a throttle on account of the E5640 CPU, faster Xeon proc...
  • Cons: The toggles between Intel Matrix Storage and ASUS's LSI MegaRaid are a bit confusing, but it seems to work, it would probably be better with the PIKE card. I didn't notice this when I bought it, but there are 8 SAS/SATA ports that are disabled unless you purchase the PIKE add on module, but there...

Second Review (after 6 months of operation)

Anonymous, Newegg
22 January 2011
  • Summary: Intel CPU coolers work just fine. Third party coolers might have a problem due to spacing - there is NO extra room. Use the BIOS to set the iKVM board ip addresses and the web interface to add users and it works fine. The DOS utility to configure the board is only useful for upgrading the SW.
  • Pros: I have been running the board for about 6 months now and I have not had any issues. I recently added the second CPU and a Pike card for additional raids. Board has been flawless. Board is very flexible and I have been able to expand as needed. I would buy it again.
  • Cons: Spacing is tight! Configuration software for iKVM board could be significantly improved. (Do NOT use the DOS utility to configure the board!) A plus would be to be able to change the port address for iKVM web interface.

ASUS Z8NA-D6 Disapointment

Christophe P., Newegg
31 December 2010
  • Summary: I made the mistake of using desktop component and graphic cards on a server / workstation board. Stick to server component and I am sure the board will run perfectly. The board works great with a Nvidia Geforce 250 but not 460 or upper range video card.
  • Pros: Good RAID Expansion if PIKE Card is available. BIOS is Easy to Set up. Needed a board to run dual processor for video production, 3d graphic production, and intensive digital graphic production. Dual Xeon works great with E5620. Customer Service not so stellar, depends on who you ended with.
  • Cons: RAM issue is quite a head ache as a previous review did mention the board does not recognize all the RAM when filled. I randomly get "Dimm Slot D1 and E1 did pass CPU memory test and will be disabled." At first I thought it was defect and had sent in, the board still has the same RAM problem I am...

Ideal for SMB server

John S., Newegg
23 December 2010
  • Summary: This motherboard plus: - 2 X L5518s with Intel Thermal Solution - 12 gigs (6 x 2) Micron ECC registered - 2 X WD1500HLFS VelociRaptors in RAID 1 (OS only) - 2 X WD1002FBYS RE3 in RAID 1 (data) - 3ware 9650SE-4LPML RAID card - Chenbro S20969 case with hot swap RAID cage - Thermaltake TR2 TRX-750M PS...
  • Pros: This is a great server motherboard for any SMB (in my humble but totally accurate opinion). ATX size increases latitude in case selection. iKVM is useful. I've had Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise running for nine months with no issues. First board was DOA - I never dock eggs for one DOA. Could ...
  • Cons: iKVM setup is a bit cranky. Once up and running, works well 95% of the time. Other 5% of the time, I lose connectivity for no apparent reason. I usually fix by disconnecting and reconnecting the power. Once, I had to remove and reinstall the iKVM chip to restore connectivity. Not worth taking awa...

ASUS Z8NA-D6 (ASMB4-IKVM

Hamed E., Newegg
22 December 2010
  • Summary: Newegg does an awesome job in their delivery department. Buy something from the site with regular shipping and chances are very good you will get it with a couple of days.
  • Pros: This is an excellent motherboard load with a lot of features in an ATX form factor. I have owned more than 10 ASUS motherboards and never had a problem with the product or the company's tech support. If you intend to install Xeon 5600 series CPUs, you need to buy the latest BIOS directly from ASU...
  • Cons: The space between the 2 CPU sockets are way too tight to install a gaming heat sink like Noctua, etc. You either have to settle for Intel stock heat sinks which are ok or get a pair of Corsair H50s I have installed a pair of Corsair H50s on an ANTEC 1200 case. Both CPUs operate around 15 degrees C

A rare Newegg blunder?

Anonymous, Newegg
16 September 2010
  • Summary: Nothing really I guess... Just make sure if you're in a hurry to get this put together you either order the BIOS at the same time from ASUS or get a 5500 series XEON.
  • Pros: Dual 1366 on an ATX board. So I can fit a dual quadcore into my 1u chassis
  • Cons: Doesn't come with the required BIOS revision to run both of my E5620's like advertised... What the hell Newegg. In this order I had both this issue as well as a power supply that came combo'd did not fit in the chassis. I read later that the comb deals are not guaranteed to fit, but they combod a...
