Must flash BIOS for Intel 4820K

D. Squires, Amazon
11 December 2013
  • Summary: I typically have no trouble building computers with Asus motherboards. This board is an exception. Had to flash the BIOS to get Intel 4820K to work. The board was giving me a CPU error LED so I RMAed the CPU only to get the same error. Everything worked after the BIOS flash...another user posted the link on how to do it.

CPU LED Red won't post

Earl Strumpell, Amazon
20 November 2013
  • Summary: CPU Red Led - as delivered i7-4820k CPU would not post on the Sabertooth X79 motherboard. Tried unplugging, reseating, rebuilding, new PS. Finally discovered MUST update bios - using handy USB flash drive process. Works great, just remember to rename the downloaded file, use a USB-2 flashdrive. Here's the link with instructions: http://event.asus.com/2012/mb/USB_BIOS_Flashback_GUIDE/ Watch the video on the right first.

Nice features and easy to setup, warrenty replacement failed motherboard very slow

Jim M. "bsedan-com", Amazon
5 November 2013
  • Summary: After only 90 days my MB failed with a boot error that could not be corrected. Asus support is there but is painfully slow and at times, depending on who you speak with, offers conflicting information. The failed unit was replaced but it took 3 weeks to get a replacement so if you have mission critical needs I would look at other options.

Lesson Learned

Moxiemeister,, TigerDirect.com
22 April 2012
  • Summary: I updated the BIOS. My RAID configured discs were returned to a non-raid mode, although the number of discs stayed constant, making it less than obvious that this had occurred. After enabling RAID mode again, Everything on my hard drives was lost. 10 years worth of photos which should have been protected by the Raid configuration are gone.

Raid Failure

vancian, TigerDirect.com
22 February 2012
  • Summary: Called Asus because Raid 0 was only showing 1 drive and intel RAID could not be accessed in Bios. Asus support acted like they were reading everything from the manual while chewing his potato chips in my ear. Took 30 minutes before support said I had a failed controller.

Windows 2008 Not Supported

Trev, memoryexpress.com
16 April 2012
  • Summary: It's an extremely fast board and should be perfect for gaming, but not if you want to use it for server applications on the Windows platform. I'm not sure how far back Linux support goes, but CentOS 6.2 runs well on it. I'm scoring low simply for the lack of Windows 2008 drivers.
  • Pros: The board was very easy to install and has a nice layout and works great under Windows 7 (assuming this is what you need).
  • Cons: As nice as this system would be for doing virtualization, ASUS does not provide any Windows 2008 drivers for it. Typically you can use Windows 7 drivers, but every one of the drivers refuses to install on 2008. Some can be hacked to work, but the network adapter is not one of them. This means the perfect board for running Hyper-V is not capable of it. VMware ESXi 5 cannot find the Ethernet adapter eithe, so it is also not usable. The only option left is VMware workst...
