The ViewSonic VX2245wm ViewDock is a 22-inch widescreen LCD that comes in a shiny black case. It features built-in speakers, a USB hub, and a camera card reader. The significant feature is its integrated iPod dock. Setting up the display requires some time as quite a few cables must be connected between your hard disk and the back and base of the display. The display can be plugged with a standard power cable, but the base requires a separate connector to power the subwoofer and iPod dock. A USB cable also needs to be connected from the display to your computer so as to use the iPod dock, the card reader, and the USB hub. However, though having the name ViewDock, video cannot be watched from a video-capable iPod directly on the display; nor is there a video output. The display includes left and right speakers just below the screen and a tiny subwoofer in the base; giving an adequate sound. The volume can be controlled by the computer’s volume control. But the iPod’s volume cannot be controlled via the iPod’s own controls. There is also an 8-in-1 flash memory card reader on the side of the display’s base as well as a USB hub with four ports to connect devices. The display has both DVI and analog video ports; the monitor displays its native 1,680-by-1,050 resolution automatically. And the display loses contrast and brightness when you shift your viewing position. Text is readable, even at small point sizes. And colors are fairly accurate as long as long as you sit directly in front of the screen. The performance of the Viewsonic VX2245wm is good. Although it works well as a common purpose LCD, its audio performance is not so satisfactory. Its method of incorporating devices is confusing, and the display suffers from a limited viewing angle.
