Excerpt: So you have yourself a nifty laptop, working away diligently when you start to realize you might need more desktop space. Using a laptop, you find yourself locked into that 15-inch monitor but you need more room, what do you do? Well Samsung might have the perfect solution for you, if you have the extra space; the Samsung LD190G USB Monitor.
Pros: Small foot print, Great colour/clairity/sharpness, Can hook up multiple USB monitors in series
Cons: Must load drivers prior to using, Due to USB functionality you cannot use 3D graphic accelerated programs
Summary: While the Colorimeter shows that the LCD has very good color accuracy, we fired up DisplayMate to see how the color scales and if there is "banding" when blending from one color to another. Pros: Compact design, VGA input as well as USB2.0, Accurate color and image quality, Allows multiple displays regardless of VGA/DVI ports, Stand folds into display for easy transportation, Great value for ~$130 online
Cons: Doesn't play back 720p or greater video, Low contrast ratio, Stand does not adjust
Conclusion: I like the Samsung LD190G and it presents a great way to add external monitor support to your notebook/netbook PC if you’ve ran out of the spare VGA connection. Utilizing the USB port to hook up an external monitor does have its limitations but overall the monitor closely resembles, feels like and performs like the Samsung 2232GW that earned the Editor’s Choice Award. However with the Samsung LD190G, while it performs great, it’s not at the same level of the 2232GW,...
Pros: Great color reproduction, Glossy looks sexy, Wide viewing angle, Includes both VGA and USB cables, Lightweight, Fast startup
Cons: Lacks DVI, Price is subjectively high, USB connection requires compromises, Ubisync USB software will tax the system, Can’t use the monitor for intensive usage if using USB connectivity
